Her smile turns into a confused frown when he drops the news. “Oh, that’s — why? I thought you were committed to seeing it through.” Aspen wasn’t a fan of arranged courtships — hell, she ran from one, but she knew this was important to Orion. What she didn’t know, and now wanted to find out, was the gravity of the current situation. “What happened?” 

“I was,” Orion insisted, though he hardly has to when she knew. He’d been fully committed to the plan set forth by his parents, even if he didn’t want to agree with it. Thank Goddess Euan was nice enough but that also made the situation he was in now that much worse. “I uh...” The pausing uncertainty of his tone is unusual. “I slept with someone else... A couple times now actually.”

sora’s eyes widened as he spoke, a small gasp falling from her lips. “really? that sounds a bit unbearable, though. i can’t imagine that being fun, but i guess beauty has to bring some type of discomfort.” still feeling worried about his wellbeing with the warmth emanating from the sun, sora opened her bag in order to offer orion an unopened bottle of water. “here, at least have this. i bought it earlier but i think you need it more than i do.” 

sora hummed at his words, shaking her head before offering him a small smile. “you aren’t bad company, if that’s what worries you. i lost my friends a few hours ago and i didn’t feel like wandering around without them. what about you, though? shouldn’t you be enjoying the festival more?” 

He can’t help but chuckle at her reaction-- Years under the scrutiny of the wealthy has long dulled Orion’s sense of discomfort when it came to attire. Today it’s not the clothes exactly that are making him uncomfortable, just the covering up and hiding until he could figure out some kind of plan to go about sorting the mess he’s made of his life. Orion takes the bottle of water gratefully. “Thanks.” He opens it and takes a sip, it is refreshing under the heat. He glances up at the sun high above them. “Did you want to get lunch, if you haven’t eaten already of course. My treat.”

A smile reaches his lips and he shakes his head. “I’m just saying; you must get sick of my face with how often you’re at the theatre.” Orion attempts the joke with a light chuckle. “Sorry to hear you lost your friends though. Being alone during the festival is never fun.” Orion’s own words draw a sigh out of him, the feeling of something missing hitting him hard. “I’m just moping, don’t mind me.”

       “you play the violin? so do i,” rosalie answers with a smile as she looks at the other wolf and then takes a drink of her strawberry iced tea as she looks back at the crowd. a soft laugh leaves the omega at the last remark, understands that it takes a lot out of anyone to perform in front of a crowd. “we should play together sometime–i bet we’d make a kick ass duo.”

“Not professionally or anything,” Orion insists. Not that he didn’t want to-- But his parents insisted his talents could be put to better use. Still, if there was one thing that could cheer him up it was talking about his music. “The violin and the piano, but I prefer the violin.” He smiles with an enthused nod at her comment while he sips his drink. “I’ve never casually played with someone else. I’d be happy to take you up on that offer if you’re serious.”

there’s an off feeling in the room, a wrong kind of energy. euan and orion haven’t breached anything past friendly since the engagement announcement, but euan’s learned to pick up on some of his future mate’s eccentricities. the stilted way that he holds himself now is one of them. “the engagement,” euan echoes as he takes a seat. both abel and roman flash in his mind  —  euan promptly ignores them both. “all right.” a breath, a tilt of his head. “what would you like to discuss?”

Euan’s staring at him expectantly as Orion sits himself down across the desk, finding sudden interest in a certificate displayed on the wall. He clears his throat in an effort to clear his thoughts, bringing his gaze back to the other wolf after taking a deep inhale of breath. “I’m calling it off.” His teeth chew lightly at his cheek after he says it with more conviction that he thought he could muster, surprising himself. “I’m sorry-- But I thought it’d be best if I came to you first so that you can prepare yourself. Even my parents haven’t been informed of my decision yet.”

“neither did i,” deva replies dryly. “though, if one thing can be said  —  at least i did make it to my altar,” she adds with a look, dark eyes and a quirked brow, teasing smile on her lips. to be fair, orion can hardly be blamed. arranged matings were so traditional and outlandish, not even her own parents attempted to pressure her into one. ice either, considering how eager he was to please them and how he was still single. ish. shaking her head to stop from dwelling on her brother’s romantic life, she tosses her hair back and sighs, “three times. three times, and you’re mated. orion you are  —  a surprise.” deva clicks her tongue, “are you? going to run?” it’s a serious question. without a mate and, possibly, without his family, orion’s left unattached here. he could run, start somewhere new. “if you need somewhere to stay …” deva looks away from orion, “you have a place with me. if things go terribly with you and your family. but if not then don’t take this as an open invitation.” 

“Touché.” Orion relents, giving a small laugh. He feels like his nerves are frayed and he hardly knows what else to do but grin and bare it as he faces of weight of his own consequences. “You’re surprised?” He finishes the rest of his ice coffee quickly enough and puts it to the side for a refill. He hasn’t been himself recently and it’s enough to surprise him too when he looks back at the past week. “This is something we’d all expect from Abel, not me.” Still it seems even his outlandish older brother had more sense than he did when it came to some things. “I’m not going to run.” He doesn’t sound like he’s sure but the throb in his chest keeps him still. “I spent the night on the sofa in my office,” Orion admits with another sigh-- He’s sure he’ll run out eventually. The reason has nothing to do with his family. His whole house smells like him and Steve and to stay there would put him into a state worse than he already was. “I’ve never spent the night on a couch in my life.”

“ the more time you spend awake, the more time you spend asleep,” the older omega responds, blowing some steam off of his cup of coffee. “ the problem with books is that no one ever writes anything worth reading about, and no one ever does anything worth writing about. do you understand my predicament now, mr. frost, jr?” 

Orion sighs and gives up. He’ll run out of breath before he manages to get Raine to say his name. “Ahh--” Eventually, after following the trail of words that spring from the other omega, Orion thinks he might have managed to understand. “Lack of muse is the problem? No sparks of inspiration during your walks about town?”

guilt tripping the younger into opening up to them genuinely wasn’t their intention. vesper was actually hoping that their comment about being the same would make the boy feel less tense, a way to reassure him that he wasn’t alone it whatever it is they are dealing with right now, and that it’s safe to confide in them. vesper is unsure about how their words have come across, but regardless, orion has accepted their offer to be a listening ear to his problems. however, the bombshell that is suddenly dropped on them doesn’t just render them speechless, but also takes them back to one of the darkest moments in their life. “ you… what??” sweet, innocent orion, marking another alpha? vesper feels like they are missing out on a lot of critical information. “ ori… are you scared that your fiancé doesn’t want you anymore now?” vesper can’t lie, that is probably what is going to happen. they have lived through that moment themselves, countless rejections, all because of the mating mark on their scent gland, currently covered in heavy make-up. “ or… or are you in love with this other alpha? is that why?” 

Frowning, Orion’s head dips forward with the weight of his guilt at Vesper’s reaction. This had been precisely why he hadn’t wanted to dump this on Vesper-- Knew it would hit a little too close to home for the other omega. Orion rubs at his temples, eyes pinched shut for a moment, not caring much about public appearance today. “No,” he finally speaks, picking his head back up. “I’m not worried about Euan. His family, maybe.” They were friends at least but there was nothing else between them. They weren’t getting married for love. Not that he was in love with Steve either. Infatuated maybe. Orion gives an uncharacteristic, frustrated groan. “I’m not in love with anyone. I don’t know what came over me.” He’d been in heat and everything was hazy but he’s pretty sure there had been no second-guessing himself at the time. “I had to tell him I was engaged so he left and now I have to tell Euan and the Moons that I’m backing out of the engagement.”

By the time they separate from the kiss there’s a grin on Orion’s lips; pleased with both the teasing praise and the reaction he got from the motion of his hips. It doesn’t last. Steve’s grip is back around his cock and moving, pulling a quiet groan from the omega. That coil of heat in his stomach is back with the promise of more though it’s not overwhelming yet.

It takes him a moment, a couple of quick breaths before he can give the alpha’s tossed back comment and nickname a chuckle. “You say that like cotton isn’t just as bad.” A breathy pause as he gazes as Steve before chuckling again. Somehow he could picture it. “Still.. it wouldn’t surprise me either. You; covered in straw.”

Orion’s hand comes up around Steve’s back, tracing muscles and lines before his fingers reach the back of his neck and a little further, to Steve’s dark hair to give a playful tug. Executed with a well time push of his hips, the alpha’s head is back enough for Orion to kiss and nip at his exposed throat.

His head falls back into the mess of pillows when he’s had enough, smirk back at his lips. He’s basking in the hazy feeling of the aftermath, soaking it in, knowing that his heat will get worse before it got better. He lets his eyes roam across Steve’s body, taking it in and feeling a growing heat that’s somewhere in his chest rather than his abdomen or hips. Certainly a new feeling but not comfortable in the least.

For some odd reason a stray thought does reach him and his eyes fleetingly glance back the way they came with a groan. “I left your soup out.”

“Sorry,” Orion catches the attention of the wolf sitting in the park with a wave. “Can you move your feet? I left my violin under there.” He points to the case tucked beneath the bench, very unlike him to leave it behind but his mind’s been elsewhere lately.

“Oh no, I’ve already been given plenty of snark over my choice on Sweeny Todd and I’ve had quite enough. I’m thinking the next event might be Swan Lake-- A ballet?” Orion gives a shrug, feeling no inspiration for anything in particular. “What do you think? I’m very much open to suggestions.”

It’s late by the time Euan arrives. The Haus is nearly empty aside from some backstage crew working on props, still Orion closes the door of his office to seclude them. “Thanks for coming. Have a seat.” Orion motions towards one of the chairs at the desk blindly. He’s still nervous-- Easily picked up by his polite awkwardness. It had always been odd between them but never did it feel quite this bad. Orion had been mentally preparing himself all day but he’s finding himself at a loss for words now. “We need to talk about the engagement.”

"There’s nothing to discuss. It wouldn’t happen. I don’t share.”

"I have a cat."

What does it feel like to have a mate?

"I've been trying not to think about it. I have more pressing issues to deal with... But it's mostly just lonely."

where do you see yourself in five years?

"Uh.... How long do cats live?"

do you feel guilty?

"About cancelling the engagement? Yes. About ruining whatever business acquisitions my parents were getting out of it? Yes. And I’m also a feeling a little guilty for the repercussions Euan will be left with. That’s it.”

vesper might be a gentle, soft spoken omega, but they aren’t stupid — something is obviously off with the younger omega, and it seems like they are purposely hiding something underneath that collar. it’s none of their business, obviously, but at the same time, vesper is the pack omega now, and if orion considers them a friend, don’t they owe it to him to at least try to help? “ that’s right, we are friends, and ori, i hope you know that if there’s something troubling you, you can tell me. whatever it is will stay between us, i promise. i mean, we… we are the same, in a way, right?” 

Vesper’s words hit him with an extra layer of guilt on the already ever-growing pile, and when Orion glances back to say something the look on the other omega’s face shuts him down. “Yeah, of course we’re the same.” He’s reassuring, stepping closer to the other wolf. Really he should remember that they were friends far before Vesper was the pack omega but it’s hard when status has been ingrained into both of them. “Just-- Come on.” He takes the other omega by the hand and leads him to the café were they can be seated before Orion unloaded his troubles. “I can’t get married.” Orion tries to say it confidently, like it wasn’t a hard blow to his family name. “I marked someone else. I haven’t told Euan or my family yet.”
