By the time you return with a first aid kit, he’s already reaching for the hammer.
You step directly in front of him.

He huffs through his nose.

Now you’re both sitting on the wooden floor of the raised chapel stage.
Sunlight spills through the broken stained glass.
Outside, birds chirp peacefully among the trees.
You pull out a cotton swab.
“This might sting a bit.”
You hover it a few inches from his arm.
“Ow!"
You flinch in surprise. Then narrow your eyes.
“I haven’t even touched you yet.”

You slap his back.

He laughs. “Sorry, sorry.”

A few moments of comfortable silence pass.

You pause.
“I actually don’t like looking at blood.”
Mio laughs.
“After all the missions you’ve been on?”
“Well, I don’t really have a choice, do I?” You squeeze some ointment, spreading it around with your pinky. “We see dead bodies in our textbooks everyday.”

You secure the bandage and pat it down.

Mio studies your work, running a thumb over the edge of the bandage.
“You know, everyone here keeps talking about you,” he says it like an afterthought.
You blink up at him.
“And I can see why. Only you would’ve forced me to stop working over a tiny cut.”
“It is not tiny.”
“It is.”
“Mio.” You cross your arms like a disappointed mom. “You really should take better care of yourself.”
He chuckles at the thought. “That’s harder for me than fixing anything at Darkwick.”
But his smile turns into something softer.
“Though…Can I come to you again if I get hurt?”
You scrunch your nose a bit.
“You know I hate dealing with blood.”
“Yeah. But you still did it.”
You sigh.
“Fine. But only small cuts, ok? Nothing too crazy. That’s for Professor Nicolas.”
“Deal.”
You expect Mio to start working immediately. But he doesn’t. Instead he leans back against his arm. His toolkit remains untouched beside him as he basks in the sunlight.
For once, he isn’t looking at the broken wall. He's not thinking about repairs or the next thing he has to do.
He’s just…there.
You look down at the bandage one last time before smiling.
