It took her only one night to disappear. To come back crawling with shame and sadness. To leave that one she felt so much for behind. Elektra couldn’t allow herself to change. As she neither could force him to join them.

The girl barely raised her eyes when she heard her master’s voice. Nor she replied his banal comment.

‘ I failed. ’ she whispered, leaning her head over her hands. ‘ I… I thought he could be like us. I thought— ’ he would be a HORRIBLE as she was. ‘ —that it would be easy. That he wouldn’t think twice before killing the man who was after his father’s murder. But… But not even like that… He’s…— GOOD. ’

Matt. He’d sent her in himself, never expecting that she’d come back to him like this. A mess of emotions. Love, no doubt. Heartbreak. Matt had overcome her, his best, and sent her back broken. No other could have done what he’d done.

“You didn’t fail.” He stood for a moment before crossing the room to sit next to her. “Mattie was always like this. Call it good, righteous, whatever. I was my mistake, Ellie. He’s not a warrior. I wanted him to be, but there’s nothing in him to make him what we need. Lost cause.”

He placed a light hand on her back. “Not your fault.”

It’s so interesting to me how differently Stick treated Matt and Elektra. How he formed an attachment with Ellie, whereas he cut off emotional connection with Matt. Based on age, it wasn’t as if there was a great difference of time there. Chances are Matt came right on the heels of leaving Ellie.

Stick did leave Ellie to another family, perhaps in his own way of breaking attachment to Ellie. But with Matt he was cruel. He was willing to kill for Ellie, even knowing what she was and what she meant. Why the cruelty with Matt? Perhaps not to make a mistake again? To return to a warrior’s detachment?

It’s honestly not something I can give a full explanation to, but the difference is striking.

Someone was inside his apartment.

Under the crack of the door, he could feel a puff of air. Wind from an open window, and he hadn’t left any open. Never did.

He opened the door slowly, hearing the small creak of someone on the couch. A familiar scent.

“Ellie,” he said, closing the door behind him. “You should have called. I would have cleaned up.”
