Why the Short Leg Walking Cast? A traditional fiberglass short leg walking cast has many benefits over the medical fracture boots (space moon boots) often given to patients. Fiberglass casts can be made from waterproof materials allowing you to swim, shower, and go to the beach. Whereas a medical fracture boot cannot even be covered by a cast cover since it is too big. A fiberglass cast is also more conformable to the body where as a medical fracture boot is so large it often causes tripping and feels heavy to lift. With a fiberglass cast you can add a heel or a cast shoe and make it a walking cast. These are much easier to fit under the bed covers at night when you are trying to sleep, than one of those huge medical boots. Not to mention the dirty bottoms of the boot that get on your covers. Also there is no way to shower with a medical boot and often they do not protect your injury as well as a solid hard cast. But most important is patient compliance. Let's face it, your going to take the boot off when YOU feel it is best and not when your doctor says it is best. A fiberglass cast is harder to remove providing for better patient compliance making sure the injury is fully healed before removal. In summary, give the BOOT the BOOT and ask your doctor for the traditional fiberglass walking cast. Better yet, order a waterproof cast kit from http://orthotape.com/ and take it to your doctor for application at your next appointment. Remember, you have a choice in your health care and recovery. Exercise your right to choice.
