Scientists unearth Africa’s oldest burial: a small child, laid to rest 78,000 years ago

Some 78,000 years ago, a community in East Africa laid to rest a child of about 3 years old. Its caretakers dug a shallow pit, curled its small body, and may have rested its head on a pillow before committing the body to the earth. A new study describing the excavation of the child’s grave reveals the oldest known evidence of modern humans in Africa burying their dead.

“It’s beautifully excavated … and there can be no dissension that it’s a burial,” says Paul Pettitt, a paleolithic archaeologist at Durham University who studies ancient mortuary practices and was not involved with the work. “It shows that the tradition of burying some of the dead … probably arose from a common custom amidst Homo sapiens in Africa.”

Intentional burials are relatively rare in the archaeological record before about 30,000 years ago. Previously, the oldest suspected burials in Africa dated to 74,000 and 68,000 years ago—in South Africa’s Border Cave and in Taramsa, Egypt, respectively. Read more.

100,000-year-old Neanderthal footprints show children playing in the sand

Some 100,000 years ago, an extended family of 36 Neanderthals walked along a beach, with the kids jumping and frolicking in the sand, scientists report after analyzing the beachgoers’ fossilized footprints in what is now southern Spain.

“We have found some areas where several small footprints appeared grouped in a chaotic arrangement,” said Eduardo Mayoral, a paleontologist at the University of Huelva and lead author of the study, which was published online March 11 in the journal Scientific Reports.

The footprints “could indicate an area of passage of very young individuals, as if they were playing or loitering on the shore of the nearby waterlogged area,” Mayoral told Live Science in an email.

In June 2020, two biologists discovered the tracks on Matalascañas beach, in Doñana National Park, after a period of intense storms and high tides. Read more.
