I haven't seen this theory on the internet yet, so I'll share it with you:

In "Four Jews in a Room," there's a line where Mendel says, "What did you do for love?" And on the second repeat, Wizzer, Marvin, and Jason blow it off. I think this is a great description of the importance of love for these boys and the beginning of their internal conflict (Wizzer wants freedom, not love, Marvin wants everything, but love isn't included, and Jason doesn't understand love because he doesn't have it). And all this theme of love flows through the musical, Jason's legendary words "My father said...", the exchange in "The thrill of first love", and eventually, the Bar Mitzvah in Wizzer's room, where he realizes what it means to be loved, when Marvin realizes that he doesn't need everything, but only one person, and Jason himself understands why his father said that love is "the most beautiful thing in the world".
