Maybe it didn’t seem like it but she was trying her hand at doing the whole being nice thing. “You are not but no. Whoever said its easier to talk to strangers than friends? They’re full of bullshit.” She pressed her lips together but sat down on the spare seat opposite him nonetheless.

“Thank you,” he smiled. “What makes you say that? You feel more judged by strangers?” he asked, taking a sip from his cup as she sat across from him.

Graham couldn’t hold back his smile completely upon Otto’s reaction. “I’m sorry. I just think that it will be better for us, in the long run, to be honest,” he played along. “How do you feel about pasta and piano music?” 

“I thought all great relationships were built on lies and deception?” he joked. “It depends-- do you consider pasta and piano music a date?”

“I don’t know what I have done to deserve this assumption but I will take it,” Michaela nodded. “Even if it is not true. You don’t need to know the wiser.”

“I mean, from our current situation, you look a little less put together, but we’ll let it slide for now since you’re hurt and it’d be mean to pick on you, I guess.”

“I need a break from being all serious, but you’re telling me this is a serious question. So– I’m afraid I can’t answer,” she gave him a small smile, leaning back in her chair to look up at him.

“That-- you can’t call me out like that,” he stated, eyebrows pulling together. “Okay, so it’s not serious to anyone but me, so it doesn’t count as serious to you, so you can answer me.”

Her fingers slipped down, riding down his neck delicately, resting on his shoulders. “Maybe,” she smiled gently. “You can be your true self. Your true self doesn’t have to set alarms. Do you want another compliment? Ask.”

He returned the soft smile, continuing to enjoy her soft touch. “What’s the fun in asking for compliments? Then they just feel forced.”

“I can’t even get an adult sized cup?” he asked but took a sip anyways. “We can still talk, you know? I mean, I know I’m not your first choice for that kinda stuff, but that should make it easier, right?”

“Maybe I’ll find out one day,” he mused, enjoying the feeling of her fingers in his hair. “Well, damn. Here I thought I could be my true self around you, but I’m too desperate.”

“I’d say that means we’re both unprepared,” Otto nodded. “I feel like yours is more a one off, though. You look like you’re generally pretty well prepared for things.”
