Africa was way too far away for Russia to actually colonize it. I know damn well that if they had the right resources or were geographically closer to it, they’ve would’ve colonized it in a heartbeat. It wasn’t convenient. On the other hand they had the Caucasus region, Siberia, etc. close and ready to invade. 

Imperialists don’t care what region they’ll invade or which group of people they’ll slaughter. The objective is to get rid of indigenous population and exploit the land.

I think people also tend to ignore that Russia was doing the exact same things that the British and French were doing when they were exploiting China in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Russia conquered land, settled ethnic Russians (e.g. Harbin Russians), forced incredibly unfair and exploitative treaties, and violently quelled any resistance (e.g. the Amur anti-Chinese Pogroms). Russia is also clearly a face in this famous political cartoon that you will always find when learning about Western imperialism in China. People who decry Western colonialism but ignore Russian colonialism are sorely mistaken that Russia was doing anything different than the Western powers did.
