The Danmichwich Photo Project (2016)

These photos are a side-by-side of moments we share on a regular basis. From the fifteen hour time difference between LA and Makati to the mats we train on and the food we eat, we can bridge the distance for a moment- all 7,300 miles between us.
We met on Tumblr. Her gorgeous smile and the quick realization that she also trained jiujitsu made me instantly follow her. A year and a half later, I messaged her. Our awkwardly polite conversation loosely promised a “let’s meet” should she ever come to the States.
A few months later, I came to SoCal to compete in the Worlds. And then I met up with him. Hugging him the first time and talking to him felt so natural. We linked arms as we walked around the venue and shared a Rice Krispies Treat watching the finals. He bought me my first In-N-Out burger and by the end of the day, I had successfully kidnapped him for the night, enjoying his company a little bit too much.
I had only a few days left before flying back home, but I needed to see more of him. He volunteered to see my sister and I off at the airport, which brought the looming sadness of my departure into reality. Though I was less than an hour away from boarding a plane back to the Philippines, I had to make my feelings known so I got him flowers. He was stunned as we looked at each other in timeless realization of our feelings for each other.
The four days we spent together were unbound by time and distance. Days following her flight back home, I texted her saying that I felt drawn to her with no intention of stopping. Months later, that hasn’t changed. In a few weeks, she will land at LAX and the next chapter of our relationship will begin.
