It’s 1872, and anthropologist Stede Bonnet has spent decades trying to prove that mermaids exist. And he should know; he's only here because one saved his life as a child. Only he and Nigel Badminton know the truth of that encounter, and now new evidence has emerged, the lifelong rivals are locked in a scientific race around the world to find the long-lost location.
Nigel might have the full weight of the British Navy behind him, but Stede has several secret weapons of his own, including the guidance of world-renowned adventurer Edward Teach, who agrees to join their mysterious expedition as soon as he meets the intrepid captain.
Ed’s got secrets of his own that can’t stay beneath the surface forever. But as they voyage across the Atlantic seeking hard proof of wonders unknown, they’ll come to believe in each other most of all.
There seems to be a bit of a mermaid trend happening here. Unintentional, I assure you; this story is very different from the last. Set in the wonderfully-crafted world of 18-century scientific expeditions, an exciting time of revolutionary discoveries in many fields! I loved that the crew all had specialty interests relating to the times (Jim truly shines in this fic).
Ed and Stede’s canon internal struggles are grafted well onto the characters here. While the situations are often dire, there is little strife between the two of them, so this story is a nice, low-angst read. The author seems very knowledgeable about the various topics brought up; it was especially enjoyable to see the art and photographs illustrating the discoveries in the story.
Excellent immersion, great detail, and quite the wild ride of an adventure!
P.S.: How could I forget the upside-down, other-dimensional Bermuda Triangle under-world! One of my favorite parts of the story, and such an awesome concept! I would read an entire fic based around this!
