Anything to walk on land 🔪 2021
every child should have a specific stuffed animal/toy that they develop an antagonistic relationship with
some of my most significant core memories involved getting into heated arguments with the furby who lived in my closet. essential component of my pre-teen character development. necessary anguish
sometimes small children will inflict years of torment & waterboarding on their victims before burying them in an unmarked concrete grave, that's just part of growing up
I'm not a catholic and have never even seen one up close, but I think the pope should start excommunicating people on the reg again. Just start publicly going "you know what, fuck you, you can't sit with us. You're not allowed in church or heaven on the grounds of being JD Vance. Eat shit and go to hell."
Stir shit up a little. What's the point of being the mouthpiece of god if nothing you say has consequences.
it's rushed and ugly, but I threw this together about it anyway.

you know you're down bad for a book when you're looking at the japanese version of it because it's 100$CND less than the english version, with free shipping.
yes, it's dressing a galaxy. disney, insight editions, hear my plea: republish this book. i am not the only one who longs, carnally, for it.
Where do I find this internet download... off to the second hand Japanese book archives, I would do so much for this book

the Relationship Ambiguity Zone™️ is a beautiful place to be. safe place to put your characters. put all characters into Relationship Ambiguity Zone. is that guy your mentor or your dad? Ambiguous!!! are you friends or enemies? Ambiguous!!! is it romantic? is it platonic? is it sexual? Ambiguous!!!!!!! never categorize anything ever in the Relationship Ambiguity Zone. just make them fucking weird about each other.
i think "bedtime abolitionist" is an unserious pejorative and i think less of people who use it. it's bad that children's lives are so heavily regimented, actually, and it'd be good for them to have more autonomy in these matters.
but, yknow. ruthless criticism of all that exists unless it makes you look like a whiny child, or something.
I used to work extensively with kids and I am unironically a bedtime abolitionist.
Specifically at summer camp, I noticed that trying to enforce a bedtime would result in nights of me going cabin to cabin telling kids to be quiet repeatedly until 1-2AM. Then we would all be cranky and exhausted about it the whole week, and it made me come off like a controlling asshole to the kids cause...I was being a controlling asshole. And like, I was young enough to have really salient memories of having been a camper, so excited to talk to new friends that I didn't sleep - the kids had good reason to stay up!
So I figured out that I could, instead, lay out the first night that they could stay up as late as they wanted, and talk to their friends, as long as they were physically in bed with lights off. I would get a lot more sleep and was better able to function in the morning, and if a kid complained about being tired the next day, I would ask about how long they stayed up the previous night and let them connect the dots themselves. Inevitably, most kids would stay up really late the first night, and then they would self-regulate and get to sleep way quicker, because they were motivated to balance their own wants & needs instead of an adult breathing down their neck about an arbitrary externally-imposed sleep deadline.
I started extending this method to more things, trying to make sure my role was less Authority Figure and more resource for learning how to care for themselves. I went through college and found it was backed up by a lot of the research out there on parenting and teaching styles. Literally just respecting the autonomy of kids in my care and talking them through decisions instead of telling them what to do would make "behavioral issues" evaporate, and make both me and the kids happier. It helped even more when I started working with traumatized kids and teens in foster care after college. Sometimes a kid would even point out to me when a given rule in a workplace didn't make sense and I could give them an exception and/or go to my boss and try to get things changed. Often, arbitrary rules from higher-ups made things way more difficult for everyone.
Trying to explain this to authoritarian parents AND my worse bosses over the course of my childcare career was like pulling teeth.
Kids deeply crave autonomy and responsibility, and if you give them the former they will often gladly take up the latter, but you have to give them the chance to make their own choices and make non-life-threatening mistakes first. But to someone who views a kid as property, or even a well-intentioned perfectionist parent, the idea of giving a kid that autonomy is terrifying, so they try to make it sound absurd to justify maintaining control.
Anyway, yeah, bedtime abolition forever. The kids will do just fine without bedtime.
I HAD a bedtime, but it was a loose bedtime, and mostly driven by myself and my sister yelling at our parents for being "too loud" (talking at a normal volume several rooms away) while we were trying to go to sleep. Most kids can and will self regulate, especially if you teach them how
Spoilers: Pursuit of Jade on Netflix (pt. 1)
I'm on Episode 26 (I'm saving ep27) and I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!! I love it so much I'm rewatching it from the beginning and I will now document all the details I loved the first time around (+ everything I noticed this time) because the shiny crow brain took over
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!! (for episode 1)
Warning for exhaustive commentary and rambling
Best opening, so pretty, sets the scene/time period/immediate situation so well!
FAN CHANGYU IS MY GIRL!!!! I loved her from picosecond one and each episode only increased that 💕
CLOTHING: I'm a clothing history nerd, and I don't know a lot about Chinese/Han/various-dynasties clothing, but PoJ does a good job of setting the tone with the cloths. Its historical enough to be immersive, colors are chosen carefully, patterns are realistically bright and pretty, but on the people of Lin'an its a bit patched and eclectic, while on the up class is more streamlined and precise. The clothes feel REAL, lived in, part of the people and cared for and chosen specially because the people liked them.
Judgy judgy, let a girl be. The writing! Even for the side and background characters, the writers/director focused on the details
Back on my bullshit -hghm costume rant: The hair is stunning!!! @mochihanfu has a wonderful video on yt about traditional Han hairstyles, and I had a lot of fun mentally checking of the ones I recognized! Thank you @mochihanfu 💕
Time 5:30 minutes in, and this is when Changyu became my favorite character ever
I love the way the writers handled exposition/foreshadowing, its super well done through the whole show
Tian Xiwei's acting skills!!!! She does such an amazing job with Changyu!
Changyu "meeting" Xie Zheng for the first time almost had me in tears laughing. Poor girl is not ready for this
Ning and Mrs. Zhao are the best and I love them so much
Again, the costumes! Mr. and Mrs. Zhao's clothes tell you so much about them an their personalities. Also, side note, the makeup artists did a great job!
Something I love across all genres of film: the way that the person tending to a bloody wound is clearly trying so hard to be convincing while also not ruing the makeup artists hard work! Its very sweet and funny now that I've noticed
Mrs. Songs actress does a stunning job making you dislike her from the first moment. Kudos for stellar acting!
SPINELESS COWARDLY LEECH, GET AWAY FROM MY GIRL!!!!!
Getting distracted by costumes again, but they let Changyu (and the other characters but we see her the most) get messy! Her hair is disheveled, her clothes are wrinkled or a bit askew. Also, I love how you can see how her braid is tied with ribbon, the red stands out so nicely
I love how she perches like a bird sometimes
Poor dear, the internalized misogyny makes me so sad, she doesn't respect her own strength and charm right now.
I love the flashbacks, the casting directors knew what they were doing "lets find the pretties, most tragic, heroic, chivalrous looking man possible, and make him look tragic and heroically wounded at all times" and they were right
Oblivious baby. And a good introduction to her very single minded focus. Do you smell future character growth? I smell future character growth
Good job Ning! honestly, using "little sister tattling on big sister" as a plot device for exposition is really smart
I love Chef Li, he's the sweetest
The hawk is super fun to watch, a good mix of practical effects/puppetry and VFX
uh oh, overly stuffed up "law enforcement" STAY AWAY FROM OUR GIRLS MAN
I love the transition with the second flashback, and the music design has me in heaven
Honorable darling boy, your lucky Changyu is so smart, and that she likes you
Good quick thinking Changyu! And Ning being her perfect adorable self
I love the angle, lighting, and song, she's his saving grace once again. (side note: he's so handsome!!!!)

REBLOG IF YOU POST RANGER'S APPRENTICE RELATED THINGOS
I’m gonna cry because I don’t have ANY Ranger’s Apprentice posts on my dash
*waves cheerily* hi
I do (and if you want more RA stuff, join the Discord server! https://discord.gg/9GfyTm6)
I finally found another person irl who likes RA and we both got unreasonably excited. Anyway, HELLO online RA people!
Here’s a lil headcannon of mine-
Will was still an apprentice when he first killed someone. When he did, he was devastated. For a few days, he struggled to perform simple tasks around the cabin and accuracy in his training decreased significantly.
When Halt asked him what was troubling him, Will explained how painful it is to be an orphan. It meant being an outcast, but most importantly, it meant never having someone to comfort you when you needed it. The thought that the man he killed may have been a father made him realize he may have given that pain to someone else.
That thought had never crossed Halt’s mind. What Will said always stuck with him, and made him more determined to love him as his own son.
I-I’m not crying. I just…caught something in my eye.
*someone off stage* What was it?
TE ARS
So you know how most people in Araluen are terrified of Rangers? What if a new guard who has only heard of the Ranger’s is posted at Castle Redmont and FREAKS when Will rides up one day. The other guards would notice this, so I just imagine them telling the guy stories about baby Will getting stuck in trees or climbing up a wall and not being able to get down (which would have totally happened at some point).
This is adorable and I am completely in favor of the Resmont guards not being scared of Ranger Will because they’ve had to rescue orphan Will from a particularly high tree.
Know that post (cant find it rn) that talks about like what order all the characters probably would die is (halt is first on the list im pretty sure but mah man is totally definitely immortal?? Hes been poisoned and conked on the head multiple times but hes still gucci) and how Will is the last
But what about George
George is valiantly trying to become immortal, on the pretense that nobody will notice him if he says inside writing long enough, and as such if the grim reaper exists he won’t remember to get him.
While I don’t think that’s going anywhere, his response of ‘so far so good’ is valid.
The Grim Reaper shows up to take him and Georgia talks his way around them. Made the Grim Reaper feel bad about themself so now they refuse to go back to get him.
My DM put Will and Halt in our DnD game and it was great, it was super cool, and then he had the audacity to say that Will wasn't a greater Ranger than Halt and I was like "FIRST OF ALL, there are NUMEROUS implications in the later books that Will is surpassing or has surpassed Halt in raw talent and just isn't confident in his abilities and/or doesn't have the experience to capitalize on it; SECOND OF ALL HALT LITERALLY SAYS MULTIPLE TIMES; THIRD OF ALL EMPEROR OF NIHON-JAN
People still think Will isnt the best ranger? Pfffft, fools.
Tbh I think Halt and Wills level of skill is almost identical to each other. Halt taught Will all he knows after all.
The barony kids are implied to be the best of their generation... Will being less skilled Halt just isn't how that works...
