Project: Identity
Overall throughout the project I have really enjoyed the concept of exploring myself as a person within different topics and developing towards my own interests and fascinations. These have included influences from people around me, my hobbies, likes, dislikes to name just a few.
To begin with we looked at self-portrait. We had to think of what our portrait consisted or if it involved our face all together. To do this we created three mood boards (or collages), showing what as an individual our personalities, interests and influences effect our day to day life. In response I did one on family and friends; on what they introduced me to that I enjoy, hobbies and interests and past creations on what I have done within the artistic world. I quite enjoyed doing this, even though very basic, I could very quickly draw inspiration from them and used this throughout my project.
We then took these mood boards forward to express ourselves as our identity. In self portrait I looked at chess pieces and what chess as a game made me feel overall. I took this forward and played around with the printing process.
Creating a number of designs I took inspiration from Marq Spusta on how he uses weird and interesting designs, combined with inspiration from Andy Warhol’s flat bold colours. I played around with knights, queens and rooks. I took this idea forward and continued to add different elements of animals that represent my families personalities, but decided to drop the idea for more successful options.
Following on, I looked at ceramics but this time the topic moved from self-portrait to text. Here we resemble words as our art form. I found the whole topic very challenging as I do not follow well with designing fonts.
Here my two main artists that I took inspiration from was Tracy Emin on how she uses her own hand writing to repeat her feeling and emotions with events happening within her life. My other inspiration was Grayson Perry who shows world wide problems though decorating classical vases.
In this I really liked the hand writing affects you get with squeezing slip out of a bottle, even though the general topic and ceramic I found very tedious. The board cutting from magazines and newspapers were incredible samey as well. Overall I wouldn’t of liked using text within my own artwork.
Finally, we represented place and expressing that as our identity. Unfortunately, the snow decided to come in and stop lectures within the last week this this was going on. As a result, I am waiting for the outcome of the laser cutter my Ironbridge that I did. As a lover of sunsets I created some ink painting, which I think are my most successful, that I really enjoyed. I experienced a new way of working that I believe that my artwork has benefited from taking inspirartion from Maggi Hambling. We looked at mapping our travels from university to home, and combining with our class to create. A little messy how it came out, but still an experience that bonded the class together.
We also did a group visit to an art museum and used their resources to research a artist there in relation to our own work. I choose Michael Lyon beucase, even though I disliked his work, the abstract work closely resembled what I was doing with sunsets, in fact his whole work was inspired though landscapes and human form.
To conclude the project has had its ups and downs but I have experienced different researching methods and techniques that I haven’t of thought of before. Especially with working with new and exciting medium that can translate to my own work.
For our last task, we looked at Art charities. One within London there is one that allows disadvantaged children and adults to do anything with a space. Here there reflected on making burgers, graffiti and other creative outcomes. Within the group Cat Woodvine, Leona Grimley, will and myself we thought about equality. This includes disabled people, every nationality to name very few (mindmap above). We came up of the idea of skill swap. Leona thought of bringing in other cloths and mending them, while other people would share there unique abilities to help people who don't necessarily have the time or money to learn them. Overall we were going to begin small and see how the idea worked within the art block, than expand to the University and finally towards the general public. In meaning I believe this is a very good idea and successful could show evolutionary towards general public
Reflecting on what we did in week 1/2, making a big drawing and taking pieces out of it. Here I did the same thing. I plan on doing a few things after which I will post as I create them (see last post for big tree)
Playing around with big pieces of paper. I made a pretty tree covered with a little snow. I quite like some elements of this. One is of the style from the trees 🌲
Ink painting experimenting with different techniques. I rubbed white acrylic paint into the water and sky - quite like the effect. Would like it if the water looked more like water, but I will experiment with this
Playing around with clay again. Thinking about the for of my grandads song 'who's that knocking on my door'
Adding Black into my work to express shadows. I quite like the effect that the sun gives off.
Sold to a friend - First ever commission done :D
Continuing with the theme of identity, I am expressing place. I have chosen a picture I took on the bus home to home of Priory Lake. Here I like the effect of where the water bled because I didn't let it dry. The layering of white acrylic paint on top to add highlights. I think it came out quite interesting.
Viva Arte Viva
Last Monday we were talking about La Biennale and the artwork exhibited there I found a lot of the artwork intresting. One that really stood out was the one with a caravan. The most intresting thing was that the art was different compared to each country. I would really like to go to the next one.
Going to the gallery of Wolverhampton, I had a look at the work of Michael Lyon, who uses sculpture in a contemporary form. One of these is the two above. His work expresses emotion and landscapes. Some of what he has done looks weird and abstract. Personally I am not a fan of his work, because I find it ugly and harsh. In many ways though, it is informing on the creation of land, sky and water. In relation to my own work, I have expressed this though ink, while Lyon expresses this though metal.
Looking at experimentations with ceramic. I like the shinny look compared to the dull one before. The slab rolling was very very fun. Cutting than pulling to refine 3D form, laytex, slip and middling with soft clay. Quite enjoyed the experience.
After talking to Maggie yesterday, I created a bigger version of my landscape painting. Here I have used more ink and bigger paint brushes. I like the free moving water, and the chaos of the brush strokes.
Graphic design - advertising, signs etc. Thinking about a poster or something on gambling and how people get into a lot of money problems. Not sure about some of the designs but I really like the design that has set limit, stick limit in a bright yellow. This is communicating that as long as you have a limit on how much your going to play with you'll be fine.
