Adult b'nai mitzvahs I love you so much. I love that the reasons for them are as varied as the Jewish people. You can do it if you converted. You can do it if you already had one at 13 but now you've reached another milestone year in old age. You can do it if you were born Jewish but raised secular and never had one. You can do it if you fled the Soviet Union or anywhere else you weren't free to practice Judaism growing up. Holocaust survivors had them if they were in camps or in hiding at the age they should've been having theirs. Trans Jews can have them as a way to affirm their gender. Women can have them if they grew up in a time or community where it was only for boys. Anyone who's had an adult b'nai mitzvah, you're an inspiration to me and you form the links in the chain that will pass the Torah down to me when I have my own bat mitzvah one day.
One thing I love about Judaism and Tanakh and Jewish folklore is how many heroes and villains and figures there are that in other cultures would be gods and demigods, but in Judaism they're just..... people. Like Moshe could easily, in another culture's mythology, be the son of a god, but he's the son of slaves, saved by the heroism of every day people like slaves and princesses and shepherds and tribal leaders. Shimshon may have supernatural strength, Miriam may have prophetic dreams, Eliyahu may have the power to revive the dead, Shlomo may be the wisest of men, but at the end of the day, they were all just people. I love that we don't have any demigods or other gods besides Hashem. It really emphasizes the power we have as humans, that we're all capable of doing great things, for better or for worse, just because we're people. We all have the power to change the world around us with the gifts we are given. No one is a god among men when we're all humans.
When I was doing tanach study more intensively than I do now (we're not talking about my tanach yomi that I started a year ago and haven't gotten past shmot bet) one thing we talked about quite frequently was how many tanach stories actually actively push back on outside tropes.
The slave boy raised by the princess does not become king and does not rule, he dies alone, in the wilderness.
The hero is defeated by his lady love, and his strength ends up killing him.
The king is told his future and loses his kingdom for that sin.
The wise men are unkind, vain, and vigorous in their condemnations of the people.
So not only are all our people only human, but our stories are at their cores rejections of other story structures, because there is no other power, no other fate, no other reward or punishment than what Hashem promises, and it is always exactly as promised. There is no trickery or circumvention.
There are many tricksters!
Lavan tricks yaakov into marrying leah
the nachash tricks chava into eating from the eitz hadaas
And my favorite of all, yaakov and rivkah trick yitzchak and eisav into forfeiting the birthright. This one stands out to me because you are supposed to side WITH the trickster. Super interesting and id love to read an essay on it.
Yaakov's whole story is going back and forth between being the trickster and getting tricked.
He plays a trick to get the birthright. Then Lavan tricks him into marrying Leah. Then Lavan tries to trick him out of his salary, and he out tricks Lavan. Then his sons trick him into believing Yosef was killed by a wild animal.
It plays out with his kids, too. Shimon and Levi use a trick to wipe out and entire town as revenge for their sister's abduction and rape. When Yehudah refuses to have his youngest son marry Tamar, she tricks him into impregnating her instead. Yosef tricks his brothers to determine if they've changed since they sold him.
King David also uses trickery at one point, and later one of his sons uses trickery to rape his own sister. Avraham uses trickery when he needs to.
And, really, the nachash doesn't trick Chava; it persuades her, but without using deception.
I think trickster is less an archetype in Tanach then it is a tool that gets used by many different figures, hero and villain alike.
And, I gotta say, I disagree strongly with that description of Moshe. Because he does grow up to rule.
Not Egypt, but he becomes the undisputed leader of the Israelites who can only be overruled by God himself, and when anyone does challenge him, the divine punishment is swift and brutal.
And "dies alone in the wilderness" is an interesting way to describe being escorted by the elders of the nation and his own student/apprentice/heir until they reach a place so holy that only he can enter it, where he is personally embraced by God and granted the peace of his final rest. It's basically an echo of Matan Torah, except this time he doesn't come back.
No, the subversion is that in, for example, Greek mythology, you don't get lowborn men raised as princes, you get princes raised in exile who eventually return to claim their birthright. Except, double subversion, he is a prince raised in exile, just a prince of the Israelites rather than of Egypt, and his first act as ruler is to overpower and humiliate Egypt in order to free the Israelites.
Also, he really never wanted to be a leader in the first place, and he spends his entire time as leader really wishing it was someone else's job.
i'm reading Anti Judaism: The Western Tradition and my biggest takeaway thus far is that we jews are stuck in a time loop. i have no other explanation

The museum at my undergrad hosted a photography exhibit by Leonard Nimoy around 2002 or 2003 featuring photographs from his Shekhina series (which is the series the above pic comes from). It's a gorgeous and powerful series.
