happy Mother’s Day to these two queens
I had never heard of this experiment until this post, so for people like me who don't know what the fuck this is, here you go (link)
In short: Cloth Mother and Wire Mother was a *highly* unethical experiment that led to incredibly important discoveries on the nature of childhood development. It proved infants require tactile comfort, more so than food. Leading to changes in how parents were advised to care for children, no longer being told that comforting crying babies would "spoil them". So despite the ethical concerns (some of these monkeys literally could not socially recover and caused, unsurprisingly, significant harm. Both physically and psychologically) the impact of this experiment prevented future childhood neglect and psychological abuse. This experiment also is what led to regulations around experiments involving animals. Also the experiment was used to study social isolation and how infants react to physical abuse from a caregiver. Which I'm not getting into because I'm really stretching the meaning of "In short" here.
It does make me wonder if the tactile comfort was actually what the infant was seeking or if it was the fact the Cloth Mother *looked* more monkey-like? I'd also be interested if it was specifically the fur texture or if other textures would have the same effects? Did the monkeys only like the fur texture because it reminded them of other monkeys? What would be the differences between them and humans? Like, would a human infant be more likely to cling to a furry mother or something more similar to human skin?

A thing about parenting is that there are a lot of behaviors that you want to encourage your future adult to have that are SO HARD TO HANDLE in children.
He HAS whatever body autonomy I can grant but I really need to marshal some arguments about not letting other children cut his hair while he’s IN class.
OK ok OK ok ONE like we can do whatever we want with our bodies as long as it’s safe but there’s a time and place like for example we only do flips on grass, in houses, or on gym mats. Being naked is also a behavior for specific circumstances like inside a house or swimming in the woods! Hair cutting is like flips or taking off all your clothes!
Two it creates a mess and is really itchy, so we have to plan to do it somewhere where we can clean it up easily and take a bath afterwards and Not! In! Your! Kindergarten! Art! Class!
Three other kids might see how much fun you’re having getting your hair cut and also cut their hair and then be sad about how their hair looks. I know YOU don’t mind (and apparently Malachi is some kind of genius kindergartner barber??) but they might mind how they look, you have to set an example.
Four the teachers get to set the rules for the classroom and if you break those rules then you don’t fill out your sticker chart. I’m pretty sure hair cutting — even consensual hair cutting — breaks a rule. You can check. Ask a hypothetical question. Don’t tell them you’ve been doing this for weeks, they might get upset.
