another reason I take issue with the retcons that Darrow and Mustang were sleeping together immediately after the Institute, beside the other more obvious ones, is that it doubles down on the already annoying decision to drop Darrow's body disphoria after the first book.

yeah, Darrow already wouldn't be sleeping with Mustang because Eo just died and he's still in complicated grief about it, she's the daughter of the man who killed her, the secrecy of his mission causes an emotioal gap he wouldn't cross sexually because he would think it's degrading to Mustang, his discomfort with Gold promiscuity and sexuality due to his Red upbringing, it cuts the tension off at the knees of their already poorly paced relationship, etc, etc.

but also Darrow would not be sleeping with Mustang because he should be too disgusted and frightened of his own skin to have sex at all. and if he does somehow have sex he should have a lot more hangups about it afterwards. in my humble opinion.

#it's just. such a particularly bad retcon too.#and the way their first sex scene is written is honestly v odd if it isn't actually their first time sleeping together #'oh but it's the first time darrow emotionally lets her in so it's still special and the scene makes sense as a kind of first—'#that man can barely fuck his fist without lawfully marrying it first cmon now #red rising #red rising critical

listen i love deanna o'lykos but i will say i think it's weird how many people take her opinion of eo as like absolutely objective gospel irt what eo was really like and not, you know, as subjective and deeply personal opinions that are probably strongly colored by having spent the last four years genuinely thinking her son was actually killed specifically because of eo. deanna's assessment of eo is most likely about as objective and accurate as darrow's assessment of eo is in book one—which is to say, not at all.

absolutely just making shit up here but i like to headcanon that Adrius' exposure was less about Adrius being insufficient as a baby and more about Nero wanting to teach Claudius a lesson about power and control and helplessness by forcing him to stand by helplessly while his brother's life hung in the balance, just as Nero was once forced to stand by helplessly and watch as his siblings were killed in front of him.

not only could it align pretty well with Nero trying to mold Claudius into the perfect heir, but making it so that Adrius' exposure wasn't actually about him also adds a fun layer to Nero and Adrius' relationship. Adrius was never the son that mattered, not even during his own exposure. it was always Claudius, Claudius, Claudius.
