The Day After We Broke Up // I Want To Protect You // One More Time // 헤어진 다음날 (Heeojin Daeumnal)
Genres: Teen, Romance, Music, Fantasy
This Netflix Original series makes you feel all the emotions on the spectrum.
Yoo Tan (L) is the frustrated lead singer of the indie band One More Time. He strives to become a famous musician and feels as if he won't achieve his dream with his band. Moon Da-in (Yoon So-hee) joined his band about 7 years ago, around the same time she and Yoo Tan became a couple. Struggling with his discontentment and money problems, Yoo Tan treats everyone around him, including his bandmates and Father, poorly. To his surprise, he gets an offer from one of the most famous entertainment agencies in South Korea under the condition to go solo and break-up with Da-in. Little did Yoo Tan know that he would get stuck in a time leap, repeating the same day over and over...
Truthfully, I had some struggles watching this K-Drama. I was not content with the personality of main character Yoo Tan. On the other hand, I have to admit that if he would have a different sort of personality, some of the major plots of the series simply wouldn’t work. He is one of those characters you love to hate. At least the first few episodes ;)
Moon Da-in is portrayed by the beautiful Yoo So-Hee and she did a pretty solid job. She is a caring and talented young woman filled with loyalty and love towards her (rather scumbag-y) boyfriend. The love she has for Yoo Tan is the one thing that keeps her alive.
The supporting characters were surprisingly nice. The cast was amazing and I often found myself adoring the other bandmates for their personality. Even the more “evil” characters had a certain charm to them.
Now, this is not just some kind of lovey-dovey romance series. If you have a problem watching material that talks about depression, death, and suicide, this may not be the best choice for you. After a while, The Day After We Broke Up gets real deep, talking about serious topics and to be quite frank, I was really surprised. Not exactly what I was thinking of while reading the description.
In conclusion: Most of the time I enjoyed this small series but I found myself to be a little bit bored from time to time around mid-season. In the end, The Day After We Broke Up was not what I expected, took turns here and there and did surprise me during major scenes. The music is perfect. Simply perfect. It fits every time and is, of course, one of the bigger components of this whole series.
I do recommend it but ask you to be cautious because of topics mentioned above. You can watch it now on Netflix.
