Ryan Reynolds talking about his dream of making a “faithful ‘Deadpool’ adaptation” back in 2009 while promoting “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”
Slut-Shaming
There is a problem
with our society.
A disease.
A plague.
A deeply rooted sickness.
What makes humans
so entitled
to feel that it is okay
to degrade others
based solely on their choices as
an independent?
As an individual?
A woman walks down the street.
She wears a flirty skirt
and a revealing blouse.
Is she not just another passerby?
Is it not true that her affairs
are meaningless to
the rest of us;
that they affect us none?
“Slut”
“Immodest bitch”
“Skank”
“She’s asking for it”
“Whore!”
It appears not.
Since when is one’s choice of clothing
a license to demean?
Since when does the amount of cloth
on flesh
determine a woman’s worth?
Her virtue?
Her status?
A woman leaves an apartment and
catches a cab home.
She enjoys many
intimate partners.
Is she not just another passerby?
Is it not true that her affairs
are meaningless to
the rest of us;
That her choices affect us none?
“Slut”
“She’s such a whore”
“Ew”
“She’s asking to be raped”
“Whore!”
It appears not.
Since when is one's sexual activity
a license to torment?
Since when does the amount of sex
one has
determine a woman’s worth?
Her safety?
Her status?
A woman stays home.
A woman folds her hands.
A woman silences herself.
A woman must not make
her own choices.
So it seems.
A woman walks home quickly.
A woman’s heart beats erratically.
A woman sits scared.
A woman is afraid
to do what she pleases
Because of how others
will treat her.
Because of how others
will see her.
Because of how her life
will be in danger.
A woman sits caged.
A woman wants her freedom.

A tree stagnated
Stunted by society's expectations
Gone, into the wind

Blue Girl
I met this girl
a few years ago.
Sweet blue eyes,
a great smile.
She was the quiet type
but
she was real nice.
I got to know her
pretty quickly.
Casual talks,
heart to hearts.
She was the private type
but
she was real nice.
Then one night
when the sun went out
and the crickets' melody
lulled every breath taker
to a sweet sleep.
She opened up
her sweet heart
but
she was real quiet.
"Two years ago"
she said
"I was at the movies"
she was alone
"I wore my favorite shirt"
it was blue
"It was really tight but
it was my favorite"
she was walking to the bathrooms
"My friends were buying popcorn"
but an older man stopped her
"I tried to run but he was stronger"
nobody stopped to help her
"My friends hadn't even noticed
I was gone"
they didn't believe her
"They said it was my fault,
that I shouldn't have worn
my favorite shirt"
She was twelve.
The only light then
in the room was
that of the moon.
Her cheek glistened
in the sorrow spotlight
and in the darkness
I heard the crickets weep.
"Whenever I tell people"
she whispered
"They call me a
slut"
her voice cracked
"They say that I
deserved it that
I was asking
for it"
the moonlight disappeared
"I don't have any friends because
I'm nothing but a whore."
As she wept,
I could hear the crickets weep.
As she wept,
I could hear the peaceful sleepers stir
As she wept,
The moon kissed her softly.
As she wept,
I wept.
How strange it is,
to blame a child
for an evil
she did not commit.
I looked back at her
the girl I had met.
I looked into her
Sweet blue eyes
and understood
why she was
the quiet type.
I met this girl
a few years ago.
Broken blue eyes,
a forced smile.
She was the quiet type
but
she was real nice

As a society we like to label
Based on appearance
or actions
Some labels have a more positive connotation
some are negative
These negative ones, like:
Whore
Skank
Bitch
And
Slut
As a whole we treat these labels like a plague
never wanting to fall in these categories,
yet we label our girls this way
This needs to stop
These labels lead to bullying
and Rape
(which of course, is her fault for getting raped)
Which further stigmatizes her
We all have done this
for this is taught by our society before we even know all the facts
but this "tradition"
needs to change
we are killing off the brightness in our young girls
Stop
Before any more damage is done.

Slut
The word is on every billboard
Slut
Its the word you can't escape
Slut
We keep calling each other names
We see what we want to see
And
We hear what we want to hear
But,
Here's a break to reality
To show the world what's out there.
We can't keep using this garbage
These words of degradation
It's killing off the spark in young girls hearts to keep them chained
They sit up straight
And they keep proper
But in those poor girls hearts
the words keep screaming at them
SLUT
You can't step one toe out of place
Or make your own choices about sex
Because if you're a virgin you're stuck-up
But if you're not than you're
A skank
A whore
A slut.

Take Your Medicine
Last week
I went to my local pharmacy and
picked up my prescription medication.
That’s normal,
right?
As I walked out I saw
a girl from my school and
she looked at my medication.
The face she made,
That’s normal,
right?
The next day
I walked into school and
everything felt different.
People whispered behind
my back
and pointed accusatory fingers
in my direction.
What did I do?
At noon
I stood in the lunch line and
heard my name,
whispered.
“She’s such a slut”
“All she does is sleep around”
“What a whore”
“She’s probably diseased”
What did I do?
As the days
wore on
I was given cold shoulders and
disgusted looks.
Nobody ate lunch with me.
I sat in the bathroom
and ate lunch on the toilet.
That’s normal,
right?
Yesterday
I left my class to cry
in the bathroom
alone.
When I came back
the room was
silent.
I sat down and
in my book
there was a
note.
The paper screamed
as I opened it.
WHORE
I ran out
of the room
alone.
I heard someone shout
“Why don’t you overdose on those pills,
you whore?”
I left the note on my desk
it had a drawing on it.
A coffin.
It said
Take Your Medicine,
Slut.
When I got home
I took the pills and
threw them in the trash.
They belonged there.
They reminded me of
me.
It’s just birth control.
I had taken the pills because I wanted
to be safe.
That’s normal,
right?

I call on you to think back
To the 1920's when segregation was occurring
Do you remember?
Do you remember the dehumanization of African Americans
Do you remember how they were considered less?
How they were somehow less human than the rest.
Something similar is happening now
Reducing peoples worth and dehumanizing them
And the name of this Demon is
Slut-Shaming
It's hurtful
Think about it
You're sitting at home one day
Your daughter comes home
after a day at school,
Tears streaming down her face,
She comes over and tells you
"Mom, they're calling me a slut.
Nobody will be seen with me
Not even (insert best friend's name here)"
Then you get angry and complain to the school that
some kids are bullying your baby girl.
They can't do anything they say.
Kids will be kids they say.
Imagine the helplessness you'd feel.
Imagine how your daughter would feel.
Would you Really do that to someone?
Would you ostracize some to the point of suicide?
Because that's what it can lead to.
This is the point of no return.
There is no turning back now.
Stop and think before you say something because it can cause
Death.

More than Binary
Two years ago, I was browsing facebook, as any ‘normal’ teen would. I scrolled past boring status after boring status until I noticed someone I was friends with had liked a picture that was getting a lot of attention. There were over one hundred comments and just as many likes. Naturally, I became curious, and read some of the most recent comments. Certain words and phrases seemed to embolden themselves off my screen- “slut”, “doesn’t respect herself”, “disgusting”, and “whore” among others. I found myself sitting in my darkened room an hour later, the bright computer screen illuminating my face, reading through each comment as more flooded in. The original picture was one a girl had posted of herself- darkened lighting, lounging in a low v-neck, tiny shorts, and a smidge of midriff showing. Tears had formed in my eyes and trickled down my cheeks- I couldn’t wrap my head around just how mean people could be. She posted a picture of herself- so what? The problem stemmed from one specific girl- let’s call her Brianna for the purposes of anonymity. Brianna was up in arms about the picture, telling the original poster to take it down and stop being a slut, that she doesn’t need to show her ass off to the world, and I remember clearly- “Don’t you respect yourself?”
Don’t you respect yourself? What kind of question was that? Hundreds after hundreds of comments- a bully’s voice solidified by a string of zeroes and ones would be engrained on the internet, but forever branded and seared into the brain of the girl who posted a selfie. The next day, the photo was gone. The girl had deleted her facebook as well, but deleting the source couldn’t remove the scars in her heart or mind. One little picture- a voluntary selfie- and because of her choice of CLOTHING she was bullied and shamed and belittled and demeaned. Why is it that just a choice of clothing made ‘Brianna’ feel entitled to treat this girl like shit?
Slut-shaming.
That is why. The whole idea pushed into the minds of our people that it is okay to degrade women because of what they wear or what they do that deviates from what we people expect them to do. The girl wore clothing that wasn’t what Brianna agreed with, and then Brianna associated her choice of clothing with her worth. Brianna reduced the girl from a human down to a plain old whore-- a less-than-human-being that suddenly, because of the amount of cotton and jean fabric on her body, had lost all self-respect and became “disgusting”. News Flash: your body isn’t your own, you must obey the wishes and demands of everyone BUT yourself, and if you try to own your body and follow your own wishes, well, then it’s just your own fault if you get bullied or shamed or assaulted.
To be called things like a whore and a slut, disgusting and worthless, because of making a personal choice of clothing- it’s a problem. To have it go so far as hours of non-stop abuse on the internet, and the accumulating shame forcing a girl’s hand to delete her account altogether-it is unspeakable. And this is only slut-shaming at its minimum- bullying, name-calling, and stigmatizing- it can get worse. It’s not just women, not just older female adults, but GIRLS. The young girls and teens of our generation face the problem as well, and if we want the suffering of our females to end, then slut-shaming must end; the problem, the disease, must be cured. It is more than binary- it’s alive and breathing and living within all the infected.

Objects hold less respect to us than People
Objects don't deserve rights or fair treatment
Objects are toys, things to discard when we are done
When females make their own choices
about sex and clothing,
with deviations from the social norm,
This idea, about rights and treatment
gets applied to them
This ridiculous notion that people are less
because of how they're dressed,
should be put to rest
six feet under
with no tombstone
