COMING OF AGE FILMS FEATURING BLACK GIRLS: YELLING TO THE SKY(2011, directed by Victoria Mahoney)

Yelling to the Sky was the 3rd coming of age film i had ever seen about a black girl, going through struggles that a lot of black girls are going through right now but are hardly talked about or showcased in mainstream media, and it poured a fuel over the intense passion i have for coming of age films about black girls and made that passion even bigger. Zoe Krazitz plays Sweetness O’hara, a 17y/o girl in high school suffering through bullying from her peers, a broken family, and having to deal with the fact that her life might be at a dead end if she doesn’t find a way out immediately. Also features other amazing black actresses like Gabourey Sidibe and Antonique Smith, making it perhaps one of the top ten best films i’ve ever watched.
