The most simple forms of PDA is applauded when the couple is in a heterosexual relationship but given strange looks when it does not abide by social norms.

Same-sex couples who decide to move on to the next phase in their relationship, parenthood, have to face insensitive parents and their rude remarks as well as being deemed as bad parents.

Straight people don’t have to go through the emotionally intensive process of “coming out of the closet” because being straight does not require a second thought.

This is Callie and Arizona, two characters from a popular television show, Grey’s Anatomy. This is one of the few LGBTQ+ relationships portrayed in media, as this community is very under-represented.

Salutations on official documents provide an acknowledgment to solely men and women and no one else. This clearly does not reflect people who identify as non-binary.

Heterosexuality is seen as superior to all other orientations causing a negative reaction from religious institutions if people stray away. In fact, a report from the Human Rights Campaign states that “ Religious fundamentalism is the strongest predictor of negative implicit evaluations of homosexual relative to heterosexual individuals.” (  Hate Crimes and Violence against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People, 2009)

According to HRC, in 2007 alone, 1,265 LGB-biased hate crimes were reported to the FBI, which is a 6-percent increase from 2006. ( Hate Crimes and Violence against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People, 2009)

Despite heterosexism, heteronormativity and the harsh treatment they face, members of the LGBTQ+ community and their supporters came together on this month to celebrate their differences and diversity at the Pride Parade 2017.
