Hi, fashion major here just trying to play devils advocate for kpop stylists
The job of a stylists is extremely (EXTREMELY) difficult. For a single comeback they have to piece together hundreds of outfits that meet the concept, look cohesive within the group during live stages, and meet the standards of y’all crazies. They are looking months if not years ahead of the current trends to put their idols in something fresh and up and coming. They have a checklist for every single performance that most of us don’t think about. They have to 1) find enough outfits for each member that 2) come together cohesively on stage and 3) attract attention from fans and non fans to garner interest in the group while 4) fitting both the concepts and the actual physical sizes of each member and 5) match the style of the song or songs should they have to style for an award show where they could be performing songs of different styles.
BTS, for example, should have completely different looks for Fake Love and Idol. The songs are totally different and the concepts are totally different. How would you, as a stylist, put together seven (SEVEN) cohesive outfits (that look good as a whole on the idol and as a whole with all six other outfits) that matches the tone of both Fake Love and Idol for an award show? You’d probably do black on black on black on black. Where is the pizazz with that? How are you going to get fans of other groups to stop and really pay attention to the group by site alone?
Of course NCT looked crazy in Limitless! Stylists were trying to find 9 outfits that match each other, blend with the hip hop concept SM is going for, stay on trend if not ahead of the trends in terms of colors, brands, fit, etc. (WHICH THEY DID) and do it lord knows how many times for each and every one of their performances during that comeback. Keep in mind these people are coming from a background where they are taught to look at things through a fashion lens. Haute couture ain’t always cute but it’s fashion and these are people that have been taught to appreciate that.
Tl;dr give stylists a break. You win some you lose some and they’re trying their best.
