Brienne had not planned to reveal herself after winning the tourney. Had definitely not planned to get disqualified for being a woman even if it didn’t surprise her. But that Jaime Lannister would seek her out afterwards was way beyond her wildest dreams. Not to mention the offer that seemed to surprise even him.

Whenever there's a Korean drama set in a restaurant, you know it's going to be filmed in one of a few locations. This show, it seems, got leftovers from Marriage Not Dating, rather than My Lovely Sam Soon/Oh My Ghostess or Love Rain/49 Days.

Bellamy playing daddy to Charlotte is so, so sweet. I'm sure it was no accident that flashback!Octavia is about the same age as the actress who plays her. Unlike most of the 100, Bellamy's parental instincts have been in overdrive for almost his whole life, and his first thought when he sees a little girl is how he can make her happy.

Knowing what we do now about the acid fog, you've got to wonder: Was Mount Weather already trying to fight the 100 in episode 3 of the first season? Or were they using the fog against the grounders, and the 100 just got in the way? Why did Mount Weather finally decide to take them in? From the beginning, it was Dante's white-guy vanity that made him interested in the 100, I guess. They came in as guests because he intended to breed them with his people, while the dirty, foreign grounders were only good enough to be a blood bank. (Gross. Now I'm imagining dark!fic about the breeding program.)

For people who've presumably never walked more than a few hundred yards at a time, our babies made this twenty-mile hike through forested mountains seem like a walk in the park. Even as a life-long earthling, I'd need at least a six-pack of Gatorade and a week of Swedish massages to recover. Also, I really love the music in this show, especially during the pilot. This might have something to do with Liz Phair being one of the music directors--we have a long history together, she and I.

In the books, Clarke and Wells were full-on dating before she went to prison. I wonder if demoting him to a childhood friend in the series was setting the stage for Clarke not being all that into boys?

The show never does explain what Wells did to get himself arrested. I guess the writers felt like they didn't need to: His character isn't around for long, and the script has already emphasized that any little crime will land a minor in lockup. In the book, Wells sets fire to the only tree on the Ark, because that was the only thing that would get the Chancellor's son arrested. The show's Ark is unforgiving, but pretty much fair. That's not at ask true of the book's Ark--it plays up the corruption and classism that's only hinted at in series. (Which, at this point, has the effect of making it feel exactly like 35 other YA novels about dystopian futures.)

What really kills me about this show is how important it allows women to be. They’re active participants in every scene, no matter how much action it has, no matter how much gore. I can’t be the only one who got goosebumps when Bellamy turned to Clarke during this episode and said, “We’re looking to you, Princess.” He put their future in her hands as the deciding vote of their mini council, and looked to her as an educated, informed equal in maters of life and death. It’s a sad fact that such a moment is so rare on television—and in the world—that it’s actually thrilling.

But then again, Clarke isn’t the only woman in this show who guards the fates of many: there’s also her mom.The previous episode ended with an adult version of the same scene. After explaining his cockamamie scheme to bring the Ark down, the Chancellor gave the floor to Abby. “What do you say? Ready to see your daughter again?”

Clarke isn't the only one who doesn't trust the people of Mount Weather. “The mountain men will come," Lincoln says in this episode. "They'll kill us all." If Mount Weather is so self-sufficient and secure, why would its inhabitants have anything to do with the grounders? Maybe they want their blood for transfusions, in an attempt to build up their immunity to radiation?

It’s probably just as well that this episode aired a while ago. Real hemorrhagic fever has been in the news an awful lot lately—Ebola is one of its forms. The version on the show isn't airborne, and it’s much less deadly than what people are now facing in Africa. (And boy is it ever faster. Real-world Ebola can incubate for up to twenty-one days, while the characters fall sick in minutes.)

Just like in episode three, the writers make good use of controlled substances here. There's comedy back at camp, and the distraction enables Lincoln to escape. While they're out of their minds on spoiled nuts, we also see great character moments for both Clarke and Bellamy. Clarke struggles with her anger at her mother, using her father's voice to express her need to forgive. And Bellamy, who has seemed so unmoved by the deaths he caused, reveals himself to be sinking under the weight of his guilt. He sees living as a punishment for what he's done, not a privilege. To Bellamy, Clarke gives what she withholds from her mother: simple, straightforward forgiveness. She does it because she needs him, and because all along she's seen his love for his sister as the motivation behind his actions. More than anyone else, Clarke appreciates Bellamy's bravery. He risked his life for Octavia when he shot Jaha and got on the drop ship. Hye risked his life for Charlotte when he stood with her against Murphy and his thugs. For all the awful things he's done, Clarke knows that Bellamy tries to do what's right. “Forgiveness isn't about what people deserve," Clarke's father said in her hallucination. If he had gotten to complete his thought, world he have said “It's what we need to give them"?

Throughout this episode, people keep referring to 'drop ships' in the plural. Guess they must still have been writing the rest of the season, because it eventually becomes clear that there's just one of them. Writing a tv series as it airs must be a lot like posting chapters of in-progress fanfic as you work--you're always running the risk painting yourself into a canon corner.

I always wonder what it's like to play a background extra on a show with a cast of thousands like this one. Do they get copies of the script, or does somebody just tell them “Act very concerned" before their scenes are shot? Are they even the same actors from episode to episode? It's not as if we can keep track of all of the people that appear on screen for two seconds a season. And yet, I can confirm that at least one extra is in more than one episode: braid-girl who failed Bellamy in the season two premiere is also in this episode, shown standing behind him when he leads Octavia's search party.
