Here are a few examples of early attempts to try and figure out how I could possibly utilize acrylic paint, 2016-17. These paintings were done on drawing-filled 3″ x 5″ and 4″ x 6″ index cards. Unfortunately, I still spend a disproportionate amount of time on small scale work like this.

Here is the first instance where I filled a piece of paper from edge-to-edge with drawing, a school project for 6th grade art class. We were instructed to make an upside down “U” shape, and then bounce back to its opposite side without lifting the pen. This would create long, worm-like lines that we were supposed to crawl across the page until there was no room left, filling in every other kernel with ink.

As adolescence wore on, I found myself craving the soothing and absorbing nature of this exercise and started to draw on the unlined side of used and left over index cards from school classes. I quickly deviated from this drawing style but there is no doubt that this project is what planted the seed.

My static has changed over the years... I don’t like any of it. That’s why I make paintings out of these drawings; to try and create something more constructive, appealing, and worthwhile out of this bad habit. An attempt to find a use for the endless piles of shit that accumulate from all of my spilled ink and so much wasted time. Unfortunately, I hardly ever finish anything.

Here are some small forms that I cut out of a painting in 2014, only cutting out the parts that I liked. They’re mostly made from ink-filled sketchbook pages. Most of the red areas are drawings that I glued facing down, so only the back of the paper is visible, which I then painted. This is basically just paper-on-paper-on-paper-on-paper. I have since shifted to using board as my support layer but enjoy being able to hold these pieces in my hands.
