when this old world starts a getting me down, and people are just too much for me to face. i'll climb way up to the top of the stairs and all my cares just drift right into space. ( they/them )

“Well, I always do. I’ll bring different brands this time. Have you tried anything besides Marlboro? Twenty minutes?” He smirked, biting their bottom lip to keep it from being too obvious. “You think we could manage? But I’ll side with you on the bridge. That’ll be fun.”

“Is that even a question, J? Of course I haven’t tried anything besides Marlboro, if I had---you’d know. Twenty minutes should work.” They nodded. “Hell yeah, of course we could. It’ll be a good backup plan, I agree. I’ve been meaning to read you this poem I found the other day, besides.”

The trick is to leave home so often that they can’t talk to you. They can’t complain about you being gone when they don’t see you.

Ah; good plan. That’s the one problem with actually having parents who like you half the time, you can never win--although I suppose that’s just a part of adolescence. Either way--your method is solid, I might have to adopt it.

“Don’t I always bring the cigarettes? Probably not long. I think the people there have us on file at this point.” A small smile creeped up on her lips, making it clear there was no regret in their words.

“Well, yes.... you usually do. They’re just such a necessity, though, I feel the need to remind you every time.” They shrugged. “Who knows. I feel like today we might be able to set a new record. Maybe make at least----twenty minutes? We could head over to the bridge after.”

“We could go to, like, a drive-in theatre. They usually have good movies. Old ones. Or we could just sit in the car and smoke and not watch. That works too.”

“Drive-ins are a favorite of mine, actually, I’ve gotta admit. I’ve got money for milkshakes and tickets---you bring the cigarettes? We could see how long we last until we’re asked to leave.”

Easy. Go to a movie. No one goes to a movie in the middle of the day.

The closest movie theater only plays stupid ones, though. I could ride down to the arthouse but I might be too lazy. Although if I do that I can stop for dinner on the way back and take even longer, so it might be worth it.

....That’s definitely true. But the question is, where do I go? There’s not much to do during the daytime.

First, my parents get mad at me for spending too much time in my room watching Netflix on the computer. Then, I leave, and they start complaining that I’m not home enough. Will I ever win?
