My name is Owen Kirby. I am a multi-media artist from Montreal with a background in science, film-making, and electroacoustic composition. This is the website I use to curate some of the things I make.

This is the kind of animation style I’ve been having fun with lately in my TouchDesigner work. I’ve changed up my website a bit to reflect that.

Here are three SuperSynth TouchDesigner Components playing a midi file from the SNES “Earthbound” video game. The footage is captured in real-time by an elgato capture card and the audio is generated in TouchDesigner.

Plateaux - Immersive A/V Performance

Plateaux is an original idea for an immersive audio-visual performance by Vincent Brault and Vincent Martin performed at the SAT in Montreal, Canada. Based on  “Milles Plateaux” by Gilles Deleuze, a post-modern philosopher, the performance imagines certain key concepts of the text and renders them in inter-actable, audio-reactive 3d scenes. I was brought in last Novemeber as a full collaborator and contributed a hefty chunk of the creative input through my software programming in TouchDesigner. It was one of my most interesting challenges to date and I am deeply grateful to Vincent Brault for his trust in my skills and abilities and for having given me this opportunity.

Here is a component I built to facilitate the use of a Novation Launchpad Pro within the TouchDesigner programming environment. I pretty much explain what it is in the video. There’s also a pdf in the github that’s linked in there. Let me know what you think!

Irradiance - architectural video mapping with real time data input and visualizations

This was the first professional project I got to work on and it was quite a challenge! We had 15 live feeds from various sources such as a geiger counter, seismograph which were sonified, visualised and then displayed on the building all at once. A red beeping rectangle would then scroll through those frequency bands one after the other and select one at a time to display individually. Every now and then some kind of “frequency ghost” would walk through and deform a mesh on which the video was textured. Anyways, it was tough dealing with all those various sensor inputs in real time + a soundtrack + managing video in real time etc but I definitely feel like I pulled through and delivered something cool.
