A Message from Lukas, Brooke, Lily, Lucianna, and Blake

College is the time to put yourself out there, broaden your horizons, and experience new things. What better way to do this than to get involved in all that Temple University has to offer! Experiencing all aspects of campus from sporting events to career fairs, and festivals to workshops, you can be fully immersed in campus life. Each event held on campus serves the purpose to get students involved, shape their ideas and beliefs, get out of their comfort zone, and have fun. To show students how to do this, we attended twenty-five different events on campus that are offered to all students. In order to describe the content of each event and the purpose it serves, we modeled it after Apollo and Dionysus, labeling each event as one or the other. Events that highlight the greater good, relating to purity and education are labeled Apollo, while events that highlight pure fun, relating to entertainment are labeled Dionysus. As a group we discovered while analyzing our events through the Apollo and Dionysus lens that there is a balance that should be maintained by every Temple University student in order to get the most out their experience as an owl. Outside of doing well academically it is extremely important to branch out and explore the university in which you belong. Events that are looked at as Apollo would include Lu Ann Cahn’s Cover Letter and Resume Workshop and the College of Liberal Arts Internship Fair help Temple University students learn about important steps to take when planning their life after graduation. Temple students have so many resources available to them while they are undergrads and to not take advantage of it is inexcusable. We believe that Temple students need to be proactive and make connections with the faculty and staff that are here to help them succeed during the four years on campus and the many after they are finished here. The events that are looked at as Dionysus would include the Alumni Tailgate at the 2018 Temple Homecoming Football Game and Temple Men’s Basketball Home Opener. These events allow students to let loose and enjoy themselves in the true spirit of Carnival. By attending these events Temple University students are able to become apart of something bigger than themselves and join a student body full of people just like themselves. Along with these events we have tip and advice that we learned along the way to help incoming students make their time at Temple University the best it can be. We feel that these events are a great representation of how diverse, beautiful, and amazing life at Temple can be and if you have the privilege to continue your education here do not waste one second of it. We urge you to take chances and get outside your comfort zone while you’re here. It starts with you. Leave your mark and make Temple much more than just your school!

WHIP’s Open Mic Night @ The Soda Bar - Apollo

I attended and performed during WHIP’s Open Mic Night at the Soda Bar. This event allowed me and my friends to showcase our talents to other Temple students that showed up to the radio station’s event. The Soda Bar is an off campus house that opens its doors to the many talented artists that belong to Temple University. They often have basement shows where local talent can come and perform. My friend Justin and I debuted a new song we’ve been working on since the beginning of the semester called Take Me Back. It was a fun and exciting experience performing in front of a crowd of our peers. We received a warm reaction from the crowd which made us even more confident in our musicianship. An event like this is very important for incoming students to attend because it allowed me to open up and express myself freely. It’s my first semester here at Temple and I love making and performing music. WHIP’s Open Mic Night gave me an opportunity to share my passion with my fellow students as well as gave me confidence to be myself in a place I’m not accustomed to like a crowded North Philly basement. Even if you’re not a performer getting out of your daily routine and exploring the city with fellow classmates is extremely important when living at Temple. This event was a great way to do that. It’s also an amazing way to meet some awesome new people!

Nail Painting for Domestic Violence Prevention- Apollo

The month of October is the month for National Domestic Violence Prevention. There are many ways to show ones support for this cause, but one of the biggest ways is to paint your ring fingernail purple. Doing so shows your alliance and support to end domestic violence. My professor held a station during class time where students were able to go and get their fingernail painted to show their support. Temple offers an encouraging and loving community, encouraging their students to stand up for what they believe in. Throughout the month of October, show your support how you see fit, knowing you have fellow students and staff to back you up.

Chinese Mid-Autumn Moon Festival -Dionysus

Temple University is one of the most diverse schools in the country, and what better way to take advantage of it than attending all of the amazing festivities hosted by all the different cultural groups! The Chinese Student Scholars Association held a celebration of the annual Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, located at the Bell Tower for all students to enjoy! At the celebration students can enjoy different Chinese foods such as moon cakes, a photo booth where you can dress in traditional Chinese garb, and a game station where people can play traditional Chinese games. Not only can students enjoy delicious (and free!) food, but also gain knowledge of one of the many different cultures represented here on Temple’s campus. Meet individuals you might have not before, and learn about the traditions and importance of their culture.

Cookie Jar and Java- Dionysus

Every Wednesday from 11:00 am-12:00 pm, Tyler School of Art hosts Cookie Jar and Java. A free event for all Temple students, located on the lower level of Tyler, where one can go to enjoy cookies, tea, and coffee, while observing Temple students own artwork. Every few weeks the art is replaced to feature other students work so you’ll always have something new to see. If you need a few minuets to kill in-between classes or even a caffeine boost before your afternoon lecture, do it all while looking at students beautiful art for free!

Institute on Disabilities Presents: Film Screening and Discussion on Film, “I Am”- Apollo

The Institute on Disabilities (IOD) and the Institute of Dance Scholarship held a movie screening of the documentary “I Am”, which highlights a group of students with disabilities practicing and performing a dance with a group of dancers from the Pennsylvania Ballet Second Company. Following the film, a panel of individuals discussed the film and answered questions from the audience. They discussed the often taboo subject of individuals with disabilities and how they should and can be fully integrated into not only dance programs, but everyday life as well. Students, parents, and faculty were able to learn about IOD and the Institute of Dance Scholarship programs at Temple, hearing directly from a Temple student who has a disability and is currently involved in the dance scholarship program. Learn about the amazing programs Temple has that focuses on inclusion and ending the stigma that surrounds those with disabilities. It will open your eyes to not only a new side of Temple University, but also to a new side of what it means to live with a disability.

Study Abroad Fair- Apollo

Want to study abroad but don’t know where to start? The Temple Study Abroad office holds multiple study abroad fairs throughout the course the semester. Tables are set up showing all the different program options for Temple students. Staff is there with explain all the ins and outs of each program, scholarship opportunities and more, providing you with pamphlets and booklets with all the necessary information. They can also tell you what needed steps to take in order to study abroad, like what info meetings to attend and how to make an appointment with a study abroad advisor. With all of these tools, it makes the whole abroad process easy and stress free!

College of Liberal Arts Internship Fair -Apollo

I attended the CLA Internship Fair on October 25th. While there were over forty employers in attendance, I was most excited about my conversation with Alysson and Gretchen from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I learned all about their summer internship program, and what it would be like as an editorial intern for them. I love art and I love being an English major, so I was absolutely thrilled to find out that this internship even existed. Also, it was really refreshing to talk to two women who were just as passionate about helping college students find their career path as they were about having their job. It helped launch me into my future plans as far as internships and career choices. This is an important event for students who in the Liberal Arts College like I am. It can help students, even freshman, begin to think about their future careers and all the possibilities they have. While it was nerve-racking a first, it was an amazing chance to gain comfortability in a professional setting talking to real employers about where your degree can take you.

Temple University Diamond Marching Band Concert 2018 - Apollo

My friends and I attended the Temple University Diamond Marching Band indoor concert. We went out to support our friend James who plays the trumpet, but we ended up learning a lot about the band itself and the director. The Diamond Marching Band has been in movies such as The Wolf of Wall Street and they have been recognized by bands such as Panic! At The Disco. I also got to learn about the leadership positions that exist within the different instrument sections of the band. And, I learned about just how much they have to learn in such a short amount of time. It was really interesting and fun to go support hundreds of fellow students that, in my opinion, are often not as respected as members of an athletic team. And, it was so fun in general to see how hard these kids work to put on a good show and make Temple Athletic events so fun and exciting. It was fun to learn and hear other students who love Temple as much as I do, continue to do what they love and are passionate about. It was a really wholesome experience.

Alumni Tailgate at the 2018 Temple Homecoming Football Game - Dionysus

This event featured tables from Alumni from all the different Colleges within Temple. You could meet and greet with different Alumni and talk about their time at Temple, all in support of fellow students as they prepared for the homecoming football game. Each table featured tons of free food and gifts for all students, parents, and fellow alumni to enjoy. There was even a live band performing which made the atmosphere that much more enjoyable. And, there were several classic tailgating games such as Can Jam and Cornhole. My favorite table at this event was the Temple Dining Services table because they featured this massive cake (pictured above) that I thought was pretty good. Overall, this event was a super fun way of showing your school spirit, loading up on free food, and having fun surrounded by past and current Temple students. There was no real structure to this event. It was very open and fun for all.

Temple Intramural Volleyball Team - Apollo

When my friends asked me to join an intramural volleyball team with them and some of their high school friends, I was hesitant at first. But, after I got over my initial fear of embarrassing myself in front of new people, I realized just how fun intramural sports can be. This is a great way to meet many new people, both on your team and on the opposing team, and have some good competition. While the games are low stakes, because they are not as serious as club or Temple sponsored athletic teams, they are still just as exciting. You can be as competitive as you want because there are playoffs and championship at the end of the season. Still, if you’re like me and are just looking for a fun way to stay active, get involved, and make new friends at Temple, this is the perfect sport and league for you. There is a light, easy-going atmosphere, that encourages improvement and learning. It also promotes a positive experience all around.

Tabling for DKA - Apollo

This semester, I had the opportunity to join a professional cinematic society, called DKA, here on campus. While it mainly features students who are Media Studies and Film majors, I am an English major and I was accepted with open arms. This organization is fairly new to Temple, as this was only their second semester on campus. However, this is already blossoming into a well-established organization and we now have thirty members. By joining DKA, I was able to make strong friendships with lots of new people who I never thought I could meet. We all are passionate about cinema which makes the organization so enjoyable and fun for everyone involved. However, at this particular event, I was able to spread the word about how amazing DKA is with the students coming and going to the Annenberg Atrium. While I was there over the course of two hours, I was able to talk to different students and tell them about all the things we do as a society, and what they could gain by simply becoming to an information session. This event helped me support an organization I am now passionate about, and it helped create an opportunity for other Temple students to become just as passionate about this organization as I am.

World AIDS Day Panel - Apollo

This event highlighted a panel of people from Temple University either students, faculty or physicians who have studied in the field around HIV and AIDS. The goal of this panel was to shine a spotlight on the work that is being done by Temple University to reduce the stigma and how to be supportive of people living with HIV and AIDS. They also talked about how students can be an active voice for people with HIV/Aids and how we can change how these people our viewed in our society. This event is great for students to get involved in because it shows them that we are the future of the world and we have the power to shape the future to be one that reflects our values. I think it’s vital for new students to attend events like this because it helps you become more empathetic to the people around you as well as help you realize that you can make difference in the world you live in.

Temple has hundreds of guest speakers come onto campus and speak to students about important issues going on around the world. A very interesting speech that is very relevant that is going on in the world today was a speech about race, politics, and identity. This touched on topics such as racism, the black lives matter movement, and violence among the African American community. Every incoming student should try and make one of these events with guest speakers because it gives each student the ability to open their minds about races that differ from their own, not only during their college career, but future careers as well. It gives students the chance to learn about the different races of the peers and future co-workers. P.S there’s also there’s usually some kind of food at EVERY Temple event! (how coool) (:

Temple University Men’s Basketball Home Opener – Dionysus

The men’s basketball team kicked off their season against LaSalle University on campus at the Liacouras Center. This game was an exciting display of talent and sportsmanship. Temple University basketball games are an incredible place to show off your school spirit. For the home opener the whole crowd stood silently until Temple scored their first basket. This created an unspoken bond between the people around you that only grew throughout the game. I think it’s extremely important for students to let out the negative experiences they had during to week into something positive. There’s no better way to do that than by letting it all out while rooting for your fellow classmates.

Temple students can throw some wild parties and you know what they say?! Safe sex is great sex LOL Temple has sexual health fairs, hosted by your fellow classmates, in promoting and informing students about safe sex among hetero and homosexual students. Each table offers different free clinics where students can get tested for stds, gave facts about safe sex and unprotected sex and gave away free condoms. Each student who is involved in the fair is also very heavily involved with LGBTQ groups on campus. It’s important for incoming students to practice safe sex not only because having a baby and being a student is hard, but also because of the different types of diseases that are around and your health is important!!
