End of Semester Thoughts

I thoroughly enjoyed this class! This class definitely reignited that curiosity I had when I was in my old major. I hope I can somehow integrate these into my work with the different options for development.

10/10 would recommend take this class again

Some pretty interesting collage by Sarah Eisenlohr and Eugenia Loli that I ran across when looking for photo collages. My VR collage isn’t this cool (yet!). The contrast in size and magnitude is definitely what draws me to these pieces. With my VR photos, I want to draw some characters on them, like in the movies Space Jam and Roger Rabbit — and hopefully make them pop in the pictures.

Blobby

The second project we did with p5.js was to make a p5.js example our own. I combined the particle system from p5.js examples and a blobby function from Daniel Shiffman’s coding challenge on youtube to create Blobby.

lil devil teemo!

The mischievousness of my imaginary friend character comes from this little guy. This new skin for Teemo is the inspiration for the juxtaposition of the innocence and cuteness of a simple character and make it devilish.

For our image coding assignment, we had to come up with an imaginary friend. Well, this is mine. His name is Tom. I would say he’s the opposite of my personality: outgoing, playful, and energetic.

The twine game I’ve been working on. It’s a bit dark, but I feel like I was able to accomplish a certain mood of the story and learn more about html and css.

Twine Inspirations

Temple of No was a really good, simple twine game that I really liked. It uses a very simple color scheme, stylistic illustrations, sound effects, and if I remember correctly, it also broke the fourth wall at times. It was simply well made, even though the story follows the same, straightforward story line. The only choice that was given was the character and a certain attribute.

Another inspiration for a non-linear narrative is a recent game called Zero Time Dilemma. It is a gore thriller game, much like the movie series Saw. I didn’t get to play this game, but I’ve watched certain video game streamers play it. What’s different about this game is the fact that to progress through the multiple branches of storyline, you needed to unlock certain events in a parallel universe. They have multiple endings and is really trying to invite the players to finish the game.

There was also this choose your own adventure comic I had when I was younger that I used to really like. It had multiple puzzles, endings, and villains and was very fun to play with. That one book lasted me a whole week to get to see all the endings. It is similar to Zero Time Dilemma where it takes commitment and time to get to see everything.

For my twine game, I kinda want to have at least two endings with some sort of visual and audio components that is simple and aesthetically thematic to the story.

I ended up putting the NFC tag on the cafe’s community board. It was kinda closed off in a corner but meh, what can ya’ do?

Dérive

So for our first assignment, we had to pick a place while drifting. The area that I was walking by is not new to me; in reality, I walk by the area everyday. In that sense, I was not drifting geographically. I was drifting in time down memory lane. Eggroll Cafe, or as my friends and I just call it casually: Eggroll, is one of those places that hold a special meaning for me.

Eggroll is one of the first places I go out to when I first came here four years ago. It brings me back to the second day here in the United States, when my orientation batch buddies and I were exploring the city and campus to look for a place to eat dinner at. Cliche? Perhaps, but good friendships and relationships were started on that day.

Eggroll has supported local artists in getting exposure and act as a place for community gatherings. From hosting open mic performances or hanging up art and posters, they have become a pretty cool place in my book. This is what made me think of adding the NFC tags in place to augment the place.

Combining nostalgia and art, I would put a link to an image of my handlettering that says “[blank] was here”. It would add art and visual disruption in a hidden and invisible way; like invisible graffiti, almost. This would still add to the purpose of the place being a medium to spread art as a community.
