We had an exciting day at Chicago-Kent today--Linda Hirshman, author of “Sisters in Law” (the only book on The Notorious RBG and Sandra Day O’Connor and their time together on SCOTUS) came to give a talk on her new book. She even signed my copy! Great book; I definitely recommend reading it.

Prime Time Nominations: Ketanji Brown Jackson

Education:

B.A., magna cum laude, Harvard

J.D., cum laude, Harvard

Career:

She clerked for Justice Beryer after law school; following that, she worked in the private sector, and for a time served as assistant special counsel to the US Sentencing Commission. Following that, she served as the DC assistant federal public defender.

Judicial Career:

She has been a judge for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, where she was nominated twice (due to a Senate absence) and subsequently confirmed.

What puts him/her to the top of the list:

She’s young, which would mean that she would most likely serve on the Court for an extended period of time. She went to Harvard, so it’s unlikely that anyone will be able to fault her educational credentials.

What might keep him/her from being confirmed:

She is still a relatively new judge, which could be held against her for those wishing for a SCOTUS appointee to have more experience.

In the words that the current generation uses, it’s awesome. It’s quite unbelievable that at age nearly 83, everyone wants to take a photograph with me….Now why is the younger generation interested in an octogenarian? Well one thing that the Shelby County dissent illustrated is that one can disagree without being disagreeable and one can be effective not by using invectives but by using reason. As for the mugs and the T-shirts that is fine, but the tattoo – that is a bit much.
