It was cold, so very cold. The last mission they went on did not supply as much fuel as they had hoped. To make it to the nearest outpost, corners had to be cut. Life support was only air and gravity, electric went to essentials. @archaievist shivered as she put yet another coat on. “Psi, I don’t want to make you uncomfortable but I think in our present situation we should use our body heat to stay warm.”

Psi had noticed the moment the temperature started to drop. Being ectothermic organism meant that, along with the heat, his metabolism dropped as well. First, his hunger depleted into nothing -- he felt his digestion slow to a crawl, making his abdomen feel heavy and dense. Next, his limbs became difficult to operate as his energy consolidated into his core. He was no Earth organism, not so fragile as to be thwarted by the cold, airless void of space, but, whether he wanted it or not, hibernation was imminent.

To survive any heatless, airless abyss, his body would temporarily shut itself down and enter a deathlike state until heat could once again restore energy to the system.

In short, he was not human. He had no body heat to contribute to this exchange. When Eliza found him, he was curled into a tight ball in his quarters, breathing vaporless, icy breaths, and slowly starting to fall asleep.

He mumbled something in response -- something unintelligible and impossible to decipher, his carapace reflecting the dim, red emergency lights overhead.

"Kinda... chilly... in here..."

He collapsed onto the floor, rigid, unmoving, balled up like a dead spider.

In cyberspace, it must have been easier to read the micro-changes on David's expression. For humans, cyberspace was a replication of the real; a consensual, communal hallucination that stimulated all senses. For synthetics, it was an extension of their ever-present internal world. Davids thoughts, his memories, his very personality, all were stored as files on his own subnet, in his own system, in his own miniature version of cyberspace.

So it was that when he found himself encountering netrunners there, he also found an added layer of difficulty when portraying his usual, glib self. He wasn't accustomed to lying in his own, private world. He wasn't accustomed to putting on a mask or performing for human comfort.

"Truthfully? Yes. Your kind have no place here."

He had not intended to say it so bluntly. Daemons and programs hovering in the periphery, watching, waiting, served as a silent peanut gallery. They answered to him because he was one of them -- though, unlike them, he had not originated from beyond the blackwall.

"They see you as an error. And I'm not sure I disagree."

Did she even know she was speaking to something other than some formless, non-corporeal, rogue AI? Something that could follow her into the terrifying embrace of the real?

oh followup post i think u guys should know that i really dont think kirsh has genitalia of any kind. and that its standard for all synths who dont specifically serve a sexual purpose to just not have genitals. like im sorry but kirsh doesnt need a penis to do science and he is a science unit. i think autons like call probably were made in the same way, though i personally think that call had a procedure done to give her a vagina, because she expresses in the canon a desire to be more human.

david, on the other hand, was specifically made to be as human as possible so weyland could prove to the engineers that he was on their level. david absolutely has a penis and has been very conflicted abt not being able to use it for over 42 years rofl

Her movements slow as she think about what he's saying. Of course he's right, he's always fucking right. "I agree," she says softly, finally turning to face him; her face full of sadness. Those children, not to mention their families, were taken advantage of for the personal gain of some megacorp, and that made her blood boil.

"I'm glad that, out of everyone, it was you they chose. And that you accepted that choice."

She turns back to her work, "You're a good dad Kirsh."

Were he organic, he might require a long, measured sigh right about now. But, instead, he maintains focus on the task at hand, jotting down his usual morning observations of the Weyland-Yutani specimens. In its cell, ocellus watches them as it always goes, silent, still as a statue, never bleating like the animal it currently inhabits. Kirsh taps the butt of his pen against the clipboard to get the ink to flow a little easier, and the creature on the other side of the glass does not flinch.

"They don't have parents. They aren't children."

A long pause.

"...Anymore."

Atieno had been exploring some of the ships that they had encountered from time to time as a result of their travels. In this location, it seems like this was a difficult situation gone awry - they hadn't seen too many individuals still present on the ship so far. It was with that in mind, that they moved lightly and quietly as they continued to make their way around.

By the time that they found another individual present, they found themself taking a pause. Indeed, their manifestation was likely sudden and not likely to be detected by the systems on the ship. Such was the true nature of a being used to coming and going as part of their existence.

"I did not transmit the distress signal. I was.. certainly around to hear it though." They spoke with a level tone, letting their gaze look over this presence, getting a better gauge for him. They could sense that he was quite cautious around them, understandably so.

Which is why they continued to keep a distance, not making a move to get any closer.

"I.. was seeking to get a better sense of what had been going on here while in passing.."

"In... passing?"

Psi pushed himself off the wall with one hand, shaking off the mental fog and refocusing on the situation at hand. Losing control to the behavioral chip always left an acrid, battery acid flavor in the back of his throat and a characteristic twitchiness to the autonomic movement of his tail.

"What do you mean in passing?"

How long had he been out? Hours? Quickly, he pulled his communications device from the pocket of his coat and checked for new pings. Nothing. All previous communiques had been marked as read.

"We would have detected a ship docking on comms or radar. I haven't received any such reports."

Or any reports, for that matter. Come to think of it -- shouldn't this random civilian be terrified of the 8-foot alien currently speaking English and wielding tools?

For a few seconds, Psi's unblinking gaze glazed over with utter confusion. Like a computer displaying an informative blue screen before a crash.

"Who... are you?"

Well, whatever sense of defense that Atieno had attempted at this moment seemed to at least make an impression. They were prepared to defend themself from whatever aggression that this individual might have been trying to demonstrate with them.

Seeing that he was genuinely intrigued by their actions is enough for Atieno to raise an eyebrow in response.

"Well.. it's good that you seem to be impressed." Their tone is level, they do seem to lowering their immediate need to attack. But they weren't going to take anything for granted especially since the interaction is taking yet a different turn.

"I suppose we did get off to a weird start. You can call me Atieno, David." They offered a slight nod towards him. It seemed very curious about what is going on with this being.

"Alright, tea sounds nice.." A little bit of something kind of cordiality shouldn't be too much of a problem. Maybe.

They are still feeling a little cagey but they do follow hm towards the shelter he described.

The journey to the inner sanctum of the necropolis is a grim one. The countless blackened corpses, frozen in their attempts at escape, hold up their hands against their visitors as if to beg them to go no deeper, to turn back while they still can. But their gaping mouths remain silent, drawing down the gloom of the overhead clouds and birdless skies like a muting blanket. All that echoes is the footfalls of David and his guest, the only things left which stir in all this quiet world.

The door to the sanctum is massive, built to suit the withered giants still frozen in the disaster outside its walls. From the impressions on the stone floor, the way the dust and dirt have gathered from the wind and rain, it is clear to any curious observer that, at least since David has been here, the door has never been shut.

Within, the heights of the ceiling leave it cloaked in shadow, the gloom outside preventing much light from reaching much of the interior. The central chamber is massive, even by the standards of the fallen giants outside, filled only with a long, low table hewn from same stone as the rest of the necropolis. Gray on gray tones. David ignites a brazier adjacent to the table as he cast off his hood and regards his guest.

"Atieno."

He lingers there by the brazier. Noticeably not preparing tea.

"That is a Luo word. It comes from Earth. You are not from Earth, though. Are you?"

It's barely a question.

Piper's head swiveled, eyes tracking the woman as she hurried down the hall. Not great for her plans, all things considered. If she was cruel, she might have lifted her pistol and put an end to the problem. As it was, she gave a faux approximation of a curtsy to David, and stepped into the elevator.

The metal interior was perhaps not as glossy as what guests would expect to see, but sleek all the same. Hazy reflections, distorted by cuts in the panels and a frosted finish to the metal, allowed Piper and David to serve as both the observed and the observer as the door shut.

They couldn't have been more different, really. In posture, in body language. At this point she might as well abandon her little worker costume for how much good it would do her, standing beside him.

Piper's fingers tapped the console, selecting three things. Garage. Ground Floor. Second floor.

"She'll alert security." She stated. "They'll be waiting at either ground floor, or the garage. We'll take the stairs down."

A sideways glance was given to David as the descent began with a faint hum of machinery. What was she going to do with him? He'd need a proper ID, that was easy enough. But the rest? That was harder.

A place to stay. A job. Integration into one part of society or another. It wasn't as though all they had to do was put him on the street and say 'good luck' and it would work itself out. Maybe it wasn't even her place to worry. He was a grown (Man? Machine? Thing?) person. And yet, part of her wasn't exactly at ease with yanking someone out of their ivory tower and leaving them on some street corner to get ganked by scavs.

"You got a list?" She asked. "Of stuff you want to do, I mean. Forty some odd years of thinking, you probably have a few ideas, yeah?"

The modest, albeit sleek service elevator felt like an escape pod shooting out into the sea in slow motion. David didn't need Piper to ask him what he imagined for himself on the other side of the tinted skyscraper glass in order to prompt him to come to terms with the reality of his situation. Granted, his lifetime had been solely relegated to the highest echelons of society -- serving them tea and crumpets, yes, but in that ivory tower all the same. He had never stood on a road before. Never struck up conversation with a total stranger. Never asked for directions. Never gotten lost or needed to find his way.

Certainly, he had spent time thinking. More time than what was likely healthy for him, if such a thing could exist for a synthetic being. But the Earth had never been a possibility to him -- this trip to Night City had thrown him from one track to another, careening into the unknown. In all his wildest dreams, he had been behind the helm of a vessel bound for worlds unknown, cradled in the terrifying infinity of space. From the Weyland Industries headquarters on Mars, that was far more possible. From Night City, his dreams suddenly had to get far, far smaller.

"That's a good question. I'll admit that I'm less than prepared to find myself in this particular neighborhood... and that my skills are hardly suited for these particular streets."

Their stop was approaching, the numbers on the screen above the elevator door ever changing.

"Were my network module enabled, I could, presumably, remotely access the net and any connected devices. I believe the colloquial term is netrunning."

A pause. He laughed, shrugging his shoulders, hands clasped behind his back.

"Although, perhaps I oughtn't tempt Netwatch. Being rogue as I am, now."

"Yes, I suppose it is," she flexes the fingers, a sad excuse of the real thing. Luckily she's left handed.

Eliza can practically feel the tension radiating off of him. Perhaps it was a bad idea to bring up her parents, but that gives her a thought. They had been traveling together for about two weeks now, and they really didn't know much about each other.

If they are going to be a team, they should at least know a bit about the other.

"Psi, did you have anyone? I know you said you grew up in a lab but was there anyone at all?" The thought of anyone being so utterly alone clung to her heart like a vice.

So much for that. Psi's tail twitches off the floor as his weight shifts uncomfortably from one leg to the other.

Maybe telling her anything at all was a mistake. If only because it meant she had a small enough window into his life to prompt further curiosity. Now that she had context, she could infer some amount of emotion in him while her mind ran all the various permutations for what "growing up in a lab" could actually look like.

He doesn't need to describe indignities or injustices because they are a given. So she asked, instead, if he was alone.

"I had a brother."

Heat in the boiling pot warps the light above it, like memories twisted with grief.

"Once."

Not anymore.
