I genuinely think the only person who knows what's going on are quinn, jack, luke, their parents to a lesser extent and brisson (and ofc guerin) and that's it!!

devils reporters love to fear monger lol, it was just some time ago when luke missed the start of the devils camp because he didn't have a deal done by then and everyone was like luke is going to sign somewhere else, the two brothers hate each other because of a fight, jack will eventually leave too as the relations between fitzy & hugheses are now strained etc lol, everything they say is complete and total bullshit!

Honestly thank you, anon this is really interesting. I honestly didn’t know if Jersey even HAD a beat reporter because to be frank, I just don’t think about them or care that much about their news. So this is great context.

I know that Vancouver fans talked a LOT about dealing with Devils fans over the years and we all kind of laughed about it. But I feel a genuine kinship with them because I truly think they’re nuts. And they love drama and I don’t get their relationship with the Hughes brothers. I mean pretty recently their older brother QUINN HUGHES was publicly pissed at them for how they treated his brothers. But anyway.

I think it’s clear that it’s not only that the Hughes camp pretty infamously is media averse and dislikes “gossip” about them and their dealings and tries to “control” it as much as possible (why they would want to stay in a heavy media market like the east coast is beyond me) but also that Guerin is (rightfully) pretty peeved from last’s shitshow that he’s treating this way differently. I don’t even think Russo is getting anything but the top line message which is “Quinn is re-signing” “we are discussing AAV right now” and that’s basically it.

Guerin’s FO was tight even before this. He just doesn’t allow leaks unless he wants them to happen. Russo was the only one who knew Guerin was going to Michigan, he was the only one who said it wouldn’t be July, he was the only one who knew they met in in New Jersey, he will likely be the one who does the initial break as well. What the Detroit and Jersey fans do have right about Russo is Guerin DOES trust him. But he trusts him because he reports responsibly, is pretty honest, and doesn’t fuck around spreading gossip. What they don’t have right is that he’s a mouthpiece for the team. It just doesn’t work like that. He doesn’t even WORK for the team. He’s been in the business for DECADES he will be here when Guerin leaves. Russo is inevitable. Sucks for us who hate his writing and attitude but. It is what it is.

where did the whole "Russo is Guerins mouthpiece" narrative come from? Is this just more NJ fans not wanting the Wild to have Quinn longer? Like their way of coping? I don't know why they always think he's lying about this

It’s because they only started paying attention to Russo literally during this whole thing. They never paid attention to his writing or interviews before this. So they see him saying “positive” things about something they believe is not happening and think he’s either lying or just saying what fans want to hear.

Not realizing that Russo would LOVE to tell us some bad news. But not only that he’s the only insider with sources and therefore the biggest, arguably, story of the off season is HIS story right now. He’d love to break news either way.

The same thing happened and is still happening with Detroit fans. They think he’s saying what Guerin wants him to say. Not realizing if they read or watched his interviews he openly says one package is shit and we have no assets. But this is what happens when a team no one really paid any attention to before Quinn Hughes suddenly has a lot of attention on it. No one knows our history, reporters, or culture.

Russo has heard from both Guerin + Quinn's camp (likely Brisson) that it'll get done, Quinn wants to be here, feels like he can win in Minnesota, etc these negotiations aren't leaking like Kaprizov's did. hammering out details like AAV, bonuses, structure, etc all take time. we will get the announcement by training camp is my guess

Funny part where Russo does discuss what he has muted and blocked. But anyway.

Quinn: it’s a negotiation. Russo discusses the landscape having changed and thinks maybe they’re working on the number. Makar and Quinn needing/wanting should be the highest paid players in the NHL because of the contracts handed out. It’s going to take a little longer, they need to come up with the numbers that make sense.

Wild still firmly believe they will re-sign Quinn. Quinn has given every indication that he plans to extend.

Similar to what Friedman said, these things get done when there’s urgency. Which leads me to:

They don’t want to reach the beginning of the season and he is not signed so that’s the deadline. If not then he’s getting traded because they can’t let him walk (just to be clear this is not what they think is happening, just that it’s the reality of if he doesn’t sign. Which we all knew and why he would be getting shopped right now if he wasn’t extending.)

The topline idea, Russo is still confident he’s going to extend. It’s just going to be more money than they thought at first.

As they get closer to training camp they’ll start to “pull the hammer down”. Russo doesn’t think it’ll get to the start of the season.

LaPanta and Russo discuss how Quinn wouldn’t want to put the Wild in a bad spot or burn a bridge. Guerin is going to be involved in Worlds, he’s certainly going to be involved in Team USA. Not that it’s about being beholden to him but that it’s an important and respectful relationship. Quinn isn’t stupid. He knows what they gave up and basically he just wouldn’t not give the Wild notice he didn’t want to extend. (Basically they wouldn’t be negotiating.) It’s both that Quinn knows what the Wild gave up and that he believes they can win and wants to be here.
