The cop in Chungking Express asks, "When did everything start having an expiration date?" while looking through cans of pineapple with the expiration date of May 1st. It's a metaphor for the expiration of the love he had with his ex-girlfriend, and expiration dates appear as a motif throughout the film which can be seen when he says, "If memories could be canned, would they also have expiry dates? If so, I hope they last for centuries."

This got me thinking about it. I feel things having an expiry date is one of the most beautiful phenomena because that fleeting nature of precious moments is what gives us the courage and desire to experience it all and make it worthwhile. And also, the inevitable fate of expiration pushes us to cherish whatever we have and live life to the fullest.

This is just like troy (2004) when achilles said "The gods envy us. They envy us because we're mortal, because any moment may be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we're doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again."
