This week I had to put my beloved dog Serj down (named after Serj Tankian) after living for 11 joyful years.. Serj had cancer in his stomach for nearly 3 years and barely indicated any pain until his final week. Last week he stopped walking. These pictures were taken on one of our last walks together back in April. Very happy to announce that I had the pleasure to be on the @voices_of_metamorphosis hosted by fellow co-worker and social worker @lisamoonlove. (LINK IN BIO) Join us in our conversation about decolonizing mental health and using our ancestral lineages to make sense of what we typically tend to put into a box of diagnosis. Engaging in these conversations on decolonizing our mental health practices allows for room for our ancestors to have their voices at the table, for us all to heal. By engaging in these conversations we can begin to ask ourselves the following questions: How did our ancestors heal from trauma? What roles did the community play in healing? And why are we not taught these practices as part of grad school mental health curricula/given space to talk about these issues in the profession? Thanks to all of those that continue to support me on this journey including my sis @maya.rise y mi abuelita Susana : our family's community healer. Reflecting on progress that made 2019 one of growth for me as an artist. Releasing my second album Sequoia while simultaneously working with youth at a site with the same name was beyond serendipitous, but destiny. I had such a dope opportunity working with both local artists both in Santa Cruz and in Colorado. Also reached listeners I never thought I would ever reach in Japan and Brazil. However this album would not ha e been possible without the folks that I met throughout the journey. Shout out to the folks that made 2019 that I made connections with and contributed to the album: Album Art: @lsiete7 Artist Collaborations: @jkhan_tho @lou.noise @c.watersmusic, Amir Feyzbakhsh and Brandon Michael Music. While the way the music industry has shifted over the past decade has allowed for artists like myself to reach new levels, I'd like to take a moment to call out #spotify on its business practices whereby artists receive only a fraction of a cent for one stream and to challenge the company to pay artists for their creative works. Artists and podcasters are already demanding that spotify pay artists for their creative works. Earlier this year my talented nephew @konor.thorn got a chance to record some cajón on a new cover track I'm working on. Adding some percussion to an acoustic guitar piece added a new vibe and sound to the recording process and a steady ambience to the track.
