Rafa's laugh and commentary here (over the soul-wrenching sobs of some dude) is the best.
Sage Against the Machine has been my favorite quest line thus far. 100%.
GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER.
I am definitely going to recreate this wonderful mood rock.
Ahhhh!!! Rafa went on a fuckin' mini rant in Spanish because he's chasing down a cat.
He hates cats.
Come quietly, DF-191...
Seeing Rafa Meditate/Pray was an experience.
I was always staring at him when he was kneeling
Same, sir. Same.
Rafa: "Mm. I don't drink."
Rafa: "Man, that stuff's not messing around! Ah. You feeling okay, amiga?"
Lady: "Feelin'? I'm feelin' like a milli... like a milll.... like forty dollars!"
Rafa posting again because he constantly delights me, I personally am taking this as Rafa doesn't drink at all. He's so me.
he's always so relatable. I love him so much.
I have a headcanon that he maybe had a problem with alcohol because of the seam and tediore. So he rather doesn't drink at all and stays sober.
Or don't. We're cool either way. /smirks.
Rafa - "Money for today and a story forever."
Rafa is willing to entertain the man for money and a good story.
Fair trade.
Gonna bet ol' Sam here will refuse to see the truth.
If anyone was wondering if Rafa was still encouraging me to walk around randomly spitting out Spanish phrases, wonder no more!
He is.
"Estás loco güey bro."
Decided to finally go ahead and make this video public
so here you go, all the lines I've managed to find and record so far. Still not convinced that I truly found all of them yet but seeing how I spend more time lately just playing the game instead of recording hours upon hours of idle lines and editing and updating this compilation, it felt like a bit of a waste to just let this sit unlisted on my channel gathering digital dust
(also forgive me if the audio levels aren't good or are on the low end. I literally installed a video editing program just to do this so I'm the biggest novice when it comes to these things and I had no idea how 99% of the settings and functions in that program worked but hopefully it's still watchable)
damn that made me like Amon even more now! I knew he had a bit of a silly side to him with the whole 'brain diamond' and all, and that he has a softer side with his love for his husband but the juice boxes is a surprise, ty for telling me ^^
next time I play bl3 I will definitely pay more attention to the enemy lines! ^^ uuhm I think having to do the VH idle lines is already time consuming enough xD it's impressive how you've managed to do compilations from multiple VH already.. I will leave the enemy lines as a mystery, especially since they seem to be even more rare than idle. And I don't even know how I would go about recording them, maybe get a triple turtle shield and just stand around a ripper camp and just let them smack me while they yell and hope I get lucky? See, this is why I appreciate your insight so much T_T I can TOTALLY see Rafa being too scared and ashamed to face his parents before he's ready and that he would feel like a little kid again and the fear of being truly known by someone, I wouldn't have been able to come up with such deep character analysis myself but reading your take, it all makes so much sense! (and If I could do it, I would just second guess myself thinking it must be wrong or out of character xD permission to use your take as inspiration in my fic?) He should really take some of his own advise (I mean, shouldn't we all??) from when he talked to the missile in the Fadefields ''You're focused on the worst outcome! But it's just as likely, things will go great.'' And now that you mention it, he really does talk rather superficial about himself, but I suppose that makes moments like the missile quest, some of his idle lines and the Genone line ''You view yourself as a weapon, but lament the humanity you gave up to become it.'' so much more valuable as little glimpses into his inner thoughts and beliefs (but damn i wish we could've let him psychoanalyze Rafa a bit more before having to kill him xD)
Ok! Deadframe time! first of, thank you for your detailed insight!
do you think the implants around his eyes physically connect to some corresponding points inside his mask (like little magnets almost)? Or do you think they mainly function as some kind of 'projectors' to display the HUD in front of his face in Overdrive? I like to believe its both. I wonder what makes the implants in the back of his neck so special that those have glowing lights? is it just cause they're possibly/probably connected to his brain and therefor simply more important? or could it simply be a 'idk it just looks cool' design choice by the artist?
ok that's an interesting idea that the kill switch would be in his torso, I think I first assumed it would be in his brain (blame the autism for talking that doctor's line too literally lol ''our IP Protection Detonator will make sure everyone gets a piece of that pretty face.'') but when you think about it, the torso (or better yet, multiple bombs spread throughout his body) would make the most sense for an IP protection system. Should a soldier fall into enemy hands, you probably want to explode them into little more than a red mist lest the competition uses any leftover bits to figure out the frame's secrets and steal it for themselves. pretty horrifying...
I also assumed that the legs were like really stuck to him and only parts of it could be removed for maintenance like the feet or the calf/shin parts, but I had never heard of osseointergrated before, that's so cool that that actually exists!
so, the things about the frame that confuses me - and it's probably a silly thing to get hung up on anyway - is the arms and the (seemingly to me at least) contradictions in his design. Default body vs Prison clothes. Prison clothes has a low neckline showing more implants on top of his shoulders and just below his clavicle? That doesn't contradict his default body cause we don't see his chest there to prove they're no implants there so I'm perfectly happy accepting those as canon. The forearms is where it gets me. Prison shows these black vambrace looking things that are close to the skin, and extending past the wrist onto the back of his hand, these are possibly embedded depending on how you look at it and interpret the design, is that the deadframe too? cause the black vs the silvery chrome of his other implants is throwing me of. There's is 1 chrome-y part tho, near his elbow. I suppose you can argue only that part is an implant and the black leathery looking vambrace is just that; a item of clothing. But then when you look at his default skin, not only is the vambrace not there, but neither is the bit that looked most like an implant, unless its juuust hidden under the end of his sleeve. And in his default skin he does have the exo part of his suit running down alongside his arms but that doesn't look connected to him on his forearm either because there's clearly a gap there.
sooo which one is canon and which one isn't?? where exactly is the exo part physically connected to his body? Is it only through the plate on his back or are there more points of connection?
the idea that I had and that I was happy-ish with before I started doubting is that the exo part along his arms and on his back is only connected to his implants via his spine and possibly on the backs of his hands underneath the armor pieces there. I think he has altered his clothes to accommodate that. Like he would have had to cut holes into his gloves so the implants on the back of his hands would be able to connect and get stuck to corresponding points on the armor. i was picturing 1 bigger implant near his wrist and then smaller implants on each knuckle, all connected to the bigger one with these 'lines' like he has with his facial ones, the end result would almost look like it's mirroring the metacarpal bones beneath. Main reasons for that design idea is just 'looks cool'.
similarly with his backplate that supports the weapon arms. I think he basically sewed it onto his jacket and altered the sweater/tshirt as well so it has holes so the backplate can properly connect to his spinal implants without any fabric in the way. Of course this would mean that he cannot remove the backplate or the armor along his arms without also taking of his jacket but I think that's a compromise I can live with for my headcannon. Also I feel like the points where it connects on his spine and hands would feel very similar to magnets in their behavior. in the lore they're most likely something way more advanced and interesting that just magnets but I imagine once they're connected, they want to stay that way untill you apply enough force to separate them.
I hope any of those hang-ups and ideas translated well to words ^^'' if its needed I will try to elaborate further
Btw, id you also think the whole bolt situation felt kinda awkward in Rafa's case? I always pictured the implants on his spine to pretty much cover his entire spine so Ive always found the idea of a bolt implant literally on top of deadframe implants to look and feel kinda silly and awkward.
follow up on the fun question. If I were to live on (a hopefully liberated) Kairos, I would probably live in the fadefields, think I'm best suited for something like farming rather than fighting + I'd get to hang out with Rush and the other Outbounders all the time :D But I love the Terminus mountains so much so ideal situation would be; live in Fadefields, vacation in Terminus xD
Thank you for making me aware of your art! I should really go to bed now cause its already 2am but I will give everything a proper look tomorrow, and also check out the other idle videos you made! I've been thinking of making Rafa gifs in the near future, I'm not a good gif maker but its a little hobby that I had years ago for other fandoms and it kinda got reawakened xD so hopefully I can make them work within tumblrs limits and post them soon-ish. Tho it will take a while to get to all of the story cutscenes since I have only have my solo run's recordings to use for it.
Yes Amon is a sweetie and his love for his husband makes my heart ache, you are welcome for expanding your view on him
Lmao XD yeah I definitely think the idle lines is enough I love when games give little bits of personality to characters through what most would consider unnecessary dialogue, (part of the reason I enjoy playing darktide all the personalities on the classes are so fun) hmm I think if I went about grabbing the VH exclusive call outs from enemies I'd probably turn all the other audio settings way down/off entirely turn up any dialogue or voice audio then just go and play as normal and see if I could nab any new or interesting lines
My dumbass forgot to attach and mention these detachable "calf" (it's for the pneumatic pistons) guards
I like all of your Rafa rambles. I do think he uses digistruct a lot. Like when he "summons" his blades or anything else. Also I think in the YouTube video where they introduced him, where he shot his commander, he didn't have the huge backpiece, and could lay flat on his back, so I think a lot of his dead frame can be digistructed.
Also in this picture we can see how the bolt and his backpiece work together. And i personally think this is how his dead frame looks when he's not using any guns. It's part of his hands. But yeah it's inconsistent
Obsessed with him
some of my favorite Rafa screenshots (so far)
My eyes have been blessed, thank you for this beautiful man 🐧
I love Rafa. "Bring it on sand, we'll see who has more grit". Please.
Alejandro did SUCH a great job with Rafa! T_T the doubling of the accent (or perhaps even triple if you wanna count NY and italian mobster as 2 different ones) is so impressive. And he seems like such a great guy in general too! I should really make some time to watch his streams, did you see that he and his spouse played through the first bit of bl4 together? I don't believe they did a full playthrough tho, since I could only find this one VOD. and I agree, the entire cast is fantastic, both VH and npc's ^^ you know, with how many people online pointed out the similarities between Zane and Rafa, I'm absolutely sure I will love Zane when i play him next time I go back to 3. Tho it will be hard to not play as Fl4k again... They're definitely my favorite. funnily enough, it's actually because of Fl4k that I ended up picking Rafa for my first bl4 run, looking at the then 4 vault hunters in the character select I saw Rafa's cool mask/helmet and thought to myself 'huh, cool robot-y mask, wonder if he's gonna be similar to Fl4k?' and the rest is history xD I didn't watch any of the character trailers until after I started so as far as the VH go, I went in completely blind. I'm not much of an end-game farmer myself, with pretty much every game I play I'm in it for the story and characters rather then for the grind. Hence why I also left pretty much all of the legendary drop/boss farming to my SO since he doesn't mind just spending hours repeating 1 boss for a drop. But still, fun end-game game modes are always good to have, even if I end up not liking them, keeps the game healthy (and the community happy). They also added the Takedown at Hadron Abyss which also counts as end-game I think cause you can really crank up the difficulty (to like the equivalent of UVH 20 I believe?) But I've only played through once on easiest difficulty. I liked it tho, the map is cool and I liked the npc scientist it introduced ^^ Peacebreaker Ricochet with hot slugger my beloved... <3 I got immense enjoyment out of that build, nothing like zooming all over the place one-shotting rippers left and right, sadly it started to feel pretty squishy and under-powered on the UVH levels so swapped to a peacebreaker rifle build instead for my UVH7 Rafa, still a lil squishy but that's ok. Since I pretty much only play that Rafa in co-op, Harlowe is always there to pick my ass off the floor xD Can confirm Harlowe is pretty good in co-op, and hopefully they will do some buffs and balance changes in the future that will give Harlowe a build you will also enjoy ^^
So far I dont have much of an opinion on Loveless yet, I will wait for her character trailer to get a good feel for her. I did see multiple people being very excited because she's former(?) Anshin and that's a corporation we apparently don't know much about yet so yay more lore! ^^ tbh i've been pretty underwhelmed with the cosmetic options in bl4 in general, maybe the other VH's are better but for Rafa I just couldn't get used to anything other than his default outfit, colors, helmet and face. Even tho some of them are pretty neat, I just can't get used to it xD Ok! Theory time! Where do you think Rafa got his flair for the dramatic from? Obviously some of it is just his personality but I like to think that growing up on The Seam, there wasn't much to do as far as free time or entertainment is concerned, maybe on one of the supply/trade ships there were some random books or echo's of some pirated, super cliche, over the top drama episodes which young Rafa found and it became his main escape from the otherwise monochrome grey landscape of the Asteroid and daily mining shifts. Or perhaps instead of a supply ship, its one of the newer colonists who brought some with them and shared them with Rafa. At least it's safe to assume he had other kids to play with too since he told Claptrap ''When *we* were little jovencitos in the mines..'' So even tho we both have the headcannon he was an only child, at least he wasn't the only kid there. and one C4sh question as well, since I haven't played him yet, I don't know much about his lore, do we know where he came from exactly or who built him? And if we don't, do you have any theories about it?
Awwh I don't watch Alejandro/KaggyCyYu but that's really cute that he and his partner played bl4 together I might watch a bit of it (I only watch the occasional full vod)
Yes I do believe you will very much enjoy Zane, and in my playthrough of bl3 I played Fl4k originally found they were a bit too squishy/ranged for my tastes plus I kinda got my ass whooped on Promethea and went and swapped to Zane and became very obsessed with his extremely fast high damage builds so when bl4 rolled around Rafa was the obvious choice for me with his movement speed and gun damage boosts, when the previews dropped for the VHs skills I read over his and went "oh! Like how Zane had xyz" so you'll probably have no trouble getting used to playing him
Absolutely same, although I did do the odd bit of farming here and there when I got a legendary I liked and the enemies started to out level it
That take down sounds crazy I'm sure the fans that loved the 2 bl3 takedowns are enjoying themselves thoroughly (if it is balanced properly I know the bl3 mayhem levels were /not/)
I ran my Rafa with the BOD shotgun and the Chuck assault rifle before that, I just found that the single reload of the hot slugger on Rafa felt too slow lol I haven't played him any since the nerf to the dancer class mod and the bod, seemed a bit unnecessary if you ask me I get they were super op but that heavy a nerf felt brutal (200% boost to overdrive skills shot down to a measly 50% boost dear God man) and why not just raise other legendaries up to their level? There are sooo many trash/gimmick legendaries that could be so cool or unique to use if they actually dealt DAMAGE (side eyes the kleidosplode with its max level flat 3000 damage) also I fully believe Rafa is just a glass cannon regardless of build I mean the community challenge for him was to get a bunch of second winds so they knew what they were doing
Yeah I hope as more news comes out about Loveless I'll warm to her more and yes she's former Anshin they are the biotechnical company the ones in charge of things like the quick change machines, various shields, and implants, medical devices things of that nature
Ditto the Rafa cosmetics I always ran his maskless head because I didn't like the vocal distortion his helmet gave , the handsome men in borderlands suffer from bad facial cosmetics (except Axton his go way too hard)
OOOHH what a good question where /did/ he get that flair and persona from...I think I agree with your thoughts of other people being transferred to the Seam and Rafa hearing stories from them and becoming enthralled, maybe his personality became more of an overcompensation thing I that regards since he had so little worldy knowledge, a sorta no one can say you're doing something wrong or that you don't belong if you have enough confidence type of thing..also yes I fully believe it's implied that the Seam had full developing families working there so there were definitely other kids to play with maybe he's always had a big imagination? Making up stories and games sneaking away from work to goof off things like that and it just stuck with him maybe he's always been that way longing to be free and careless without a worry in the world...
C4SH is a former casino bot I don't think it's ever specified where from but considering the handsome jackpot dlc exists there's apparently a niche for giant space station casinos so probably just manufactured for that purpose...but thinking about some of his lines in combat with the order it seems like he was rather sturdily built (paraphrasing here but one of em is like "these new models break too easy") so he couldn't have been mass produced/digistructed it would've cost too much so maybe a few models were made for a set of high roller clientele, ones who feel lucky or confident enough in their skills to beat a robot who's whole job and programming it is to count cards and do statistics
