❝ i’m gonna change, helene. ❞ michael speaks lowly ; sincerely. ❝ the way i’ve been, all that anger, all the bullshit . . . it ain’t me. i don’t want it to be me. i’m gonna be better for you ; for CLAYTON. i promise. ❞
I don’t know how many people will catch this but Cohle asked for a beer for one reason. Because he’s a functioning alcoholic who knows who he is, but the bigger that once he starts drinking anything he says in that room is inadmissible. || Inside the Episode #5

your father was ALWAYS looking for a way to leave you and your mom. why else would he have never come back? not even after she died?
lie to my muse.
❝ i’m sorry, is that supposed to hurt my feelings? ❞ considering his own complicated relationship with michael, the statement could definitely be true. it was certainly a doubt that had crossed his mind more than a couple times back when he was younger, but these days? not so much. it didn’t matter to him if his father had wanted to leave him, or if he hadn’t. part of him knows it’s much more complicated than that, but the point was he’d still left, and there wasn’t anything either of them could do to change that. ❝ he didn’t come back because he’s a coward and couldn’t face up to his own mistakes. it really doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. but nice try. ❞
┈ @paindrove.
a Thing to think about: when milly showed up to confront michael, she didn’t know what to expect, but it definitely wasn’t what she found. part of her had expected to find a man living a whole knew life, maybe with a new family, maybe with a huge house and a nice car. part of her had expected to find a man with no remorse, and she’d expected to even take out all her anger on him if that was true. how dare you abandon your son? how dare you hurt him like that? but she didn’t do that. she hesitantly tucked her gun away and listened to him explain things, for hours. he probably asked her if she wanted something to drink, or if she was hungry ------ “i got some tv dinners and some sprite. or, i can put some coffee on, if you want that ; actually, i might have a box of hamburger helper somewhere.” he’d rambled on as he shuffled through his trailer’s small kitchen. she’d be so confused, but she’d understand. ‘this man is a caretaker,’ she’d think, ‘but the world took that from him.’ she’d probably leave shortly after that, conflicted in finding out there were two painful sides to the story.
crcss:
if anything, clay is almost impressed at how much michael seemed to know about all of this — but then again, he figures it makes enough sense. disappearing off the face of the earth for two decades would teach anyone a trick or two. plus, it was the whole reason they’d made this trip to him in the first place. a lot of it seemed like common sense so far, though he’d admit, he’d never given the whole small towns vs. small cities thing a thought. ❝ is that what you did? ❞
there it is again, the heavy guilt that had found a home in the core of his chest. “ no, not at first. ” he wants to say, “ i was right behind you for six years, following wherever you and your mother went, making sure you were safe, making sure those psycho sons of bitches weren’t anywhere near you. you have no idea how close i was to you ; no idea how many times i was so close to comin’ back, son. you have no idea how many ‘ ALMOSTS ’ make up the story of how things really happened. ”
. . . BUT HE DOESN’T SAY ANY OF IT. he doesn’t deserve his son’s sympathy.
❝ yeah. ❞ he replies. he decides it’s easier to give his son another reason to hate him than to try and give him a desperate reason to love him. ❝ i’ll tell you what, in two decades, the only time i got found in a small city was when vermilion came knockin’ on my door back in cheyenne. ❞
#i love seeing my mom happy #it’s what she deserves
It’s my bad, boys. Maybe we got started on the wrong foot there.
That’s 9 o’clock on the dot, okay?
