He doesn’t scream, he doesn’t yell,
He doesn’t hurt you the way you’ve been hurt before,
The way you know how to be hurt.
He doesn’t touch you with his lips
Or hold your hand in his.
He isn’t weak, he doesn’t let you stop breathing
Even when it feels like your heart is on its last beat,
Nor does he stroke your hair as he cradles
You against him over the sheets.
He isn’t a gentleman though he dresses the part.
He doesn’t let you push him away,
Or maybe you can’t let yourself.
He never asks; he only tells.
He can’t stop the pain he caused and
Perhaps he doesn’t know how
There’s a chance he doesn’t love you;
He isn’t loyal, he isn’t faithful,
And no effort on your part can ever please him.
He hurts, he aches, he teaches you
About emotional pain so heavy
The physical pain dissipates under its weight.
