Armando Silva was one of three Main Street muralists we met a few weeks ago, but we were so impressed with him that we wanted to hear more about the art he creates in both his studio and on the street to beautify downtown Greeley, CO.

30 Years and Counting: Benji Lewis of Macon, Georgia

When it comes to downtown revitalization, nobody knows how to do it better than the contractors who actually live in the towns themselves. Â When we set out to paint 20 Main Streets, we hired the best contractors in each town to get the job done right. Â These individuals are passionate about their work and about helping to better their communities.
Check out this AMAZING window display in historic Ellicott City, MD! Tammy Beideman, owner of Sweet Elizabeth Jane, told us that she wanted to highlight the businesses, landmarks, and people that make Elicott City great. “All of it together is what makes the town strong, and then Benjamin Moore came in and brought everything together. I really do think it’s one of the best things to happen to our town.”
Benjamin Moore's 'Main Street Matters' campaign comes to the unique community of Texarkana, USA, a town that occupies both Texas and Arkansas. Despite being separated by a border, these two communities came together to revitalize their Main Street.

What's in a Name: Putting History on the Map
Of the twenty Main Streets that received a fresh coat of paint as part of Main Street Matters, half were actually called Main Street. The other half boast a wide variety of colorful names, from Kamehameha Avenue to Quinpool Road. Learn more about four streets that are breaking the Main Street mold.
In Flint, Michigan, University Avenue has been undergoing a revitalization project for a few years now. Local foundations have been hard at work turning University Avenue (formerly known as Third Avenue) into a mile-long “University Corridor” connecting the University of Michigan-Flint with Kettering University. Students play a huge part in this project, recently forming the Flint Brush Up initiative. In May, Flint Brush Up teamed with the University Avenue Corridor Coalition and Paint What Matters to take the revitalization efforts to the next level with some deep cleaning and landscaping work. For Flint, a new name means a lot more than just a new sign—it’s a symbol of the transformation in progress.
Halifax, Nova Scotia wears its history proudly, and the name of its Main Street is no exception. Quinpool Road can trace its origins to at least 1808. According to a Halifax Irish tradition, the name Quinpool is said to come from Quin’s Pool, the body of water near the house of a widow named Quin. The heritage of this name is no coincidence—Halifax boasts a rich history of Irish settlers, and about one in four Nova Scotians is of Irish descent.
Kamehameha Avenue in Hilo, Hawaii has similarly historical roots, named after the king who unified the Hawaiian Islands and established the Kingdom of Hawai’i in 1810. According to Hawaiian oral tradition, after a prophecy predicted the birth of a great leader, the ruling king ordered the infant be put to death. Instead, he was raised in secret, later adopting the name Kamehameha, meaning “The Very Lonely One,” or “The One Set Apart.” But today the street itself is anything but—it’s a lively community hub combining gorgeous scenery with thriving local businesses, making it a destination for locals and visitors alike.
Almost five thousand miles away, a different Main Street Matters town also faces the sea: Sea Bright, New Jersey boasts boardwalks and beaches and plenty of sand. Ocean Avenue separates land from sea in this coastal town. Sea Bright was ravaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, but has since rebuilt stronger and better than ever. As in Hilo, Sea Bright’s resilient, tight-knit community and beautiful beaches make it a standout in an area where scenic views aren’t hard to come by.
