Domenico Modugno, "Meraviglioso" ca. 1968
It is a cool, dark, 4am on a Friday morning in September, in the back of an airport taxi, en route from Cleveland to Miami Beach. A certain winemaker, "il dottore", an optimistic, brilliant man who coaxes the earth of Montefalco from his vineyards into these dark, brooding Sagrantinos, and teases just the perfect amount of aromatic complexity from his Trebbiano Spoletino...whose cantina is thought of as "Progetto Positivo". Always in an uncanny spirit of optimism, croons at the top of his lungs, soon thereafter I too have absorbed the spirit and we serenade our cabbie:
Meraviglioso,
il bene di una donna che ama solo te/
meraviglioso la luce di un mattino/
l'abbraccio di un amico/
il viso dì un bambino,
meraviglioso.
