I keep thinking about @inc0mple 's theory about how Nox is some sort of fictional character that traveled from his own fictional world to the real one (go read it, they make some incredible points) and I kinda wanted to add a little bit to it. Nothing that mind-blowing ofc, just some stuff that could count as extra evidence for Nox being a character from a fictional world. They were probably already mentioned at some point but anyway, let's get to it.
For starters, let's try to see stuff from Nox's point of view. What is it that Chase does? Why is he so bothered by him?
Aside from the Narratonin stuff, in the beginning Chase walks into the books without giving a single fuck about the narrative or the story itself. He doesn't wanna be there. He doesn't pay attention to the characters and can't wait for it to be over. Nox believes he's there out of stupidity alone.
Then Chase completes the entire original story of Cinderella, a kind of disturbing tale, and manages to twist the plot in a way that's forgiving to the characters the narrative deems villainous. He learns from the whole experience and puts the well being of the characters above the bet he had with Nox.
Nox's admiration for him grows just a bit but so does his resentment. By a lot. Now he knows Chase isn't stupid or incapable of doing stuff, therefore he starts believing that the reason he doesn't do the stories properly must be because he hates books.
He believes so even after he made peace with him in the Beach Boys arc and doesn't hesitate to bring it up in Sick Day arc. And we know that stings bc look at that man's face when he asks him the question.
I thought the question felt kinda off at that point, so I believe there's something deeper behind his words here.
"Why do you hate my world so much when everything is possible there, especially if you're a heroine?" Y'know?
Then there's other parts of dialogue.
He's been human before but never sick? That alone feels a bit weird. I assume this could be because in the story he's from, there was never written that he was sick at any point.
Also Chase is urging him not to be a villain, despite what he has done in the past. If being villainous is all he's ever known, of course he's pissed off at Chase encouraging him to be better. In his eyes, Chase doesn't understand anything about how he's been living.
Another detail I like that could be considered proof (if you squint your eyes hard enough) is that Nox is, to put it simply, an attention whore. And he's mad when he's not receiving the attention he wants.
I haven't read the elephant book yet but, according to the explanation on incomple's post, the story talks about fictional characters that tried escaping to other worlds and come to life thanks to the readers' love for them.
In that context, it makes even more sense that Nox wants attention. People's attention and love for him is what keeps him real, what helped him escape to another world. What's the point of a character existing if no one pays attention to them? If no one likes them?
