The Classic Femme Fatale

Part 1: Methods of Murder

In her second guise, Ivy is focused on making an entrance and dialling up the seduction. Ivy is still playing a game of subterfuge at this point, her first port of call at this point being to disguise herself as her previous human incarnation, using her guise as the scientist to hide in plain sight and blend in with her surroundings, while her strategy would also not seem out of the ordinary, being a proposal (albeit an extreme one). Her original research at the press meeting isn’t without it’s complications, but nonetheless highlights two potential targets and an opportunity to ensnare them.

At this point, Ivy’s general plan is in place, but still quite loose, to use her kiss to kill the caped crusaders. Her method is simple, infiltrate the gala, use her new love dust to ensnare everyone and present herself as an irresistible prize. It’s nothing too out of the ordinary and it would lead to a certain level of control. The winner will spend the night with her, her pheromones ensuring that she can be patient until the lucky man will whisk her away to somewhere private, or otherwise be coerced by Ivy to do so, where she can deliver her fatal kiss without any witnesses. It’s all a very classic Femme Fatale trope, the beautiful and disarming woman suddenly appearing, before luring the target into a vulnerable position while alone, often to their demise.

The Love Dust itself is a strange creation, a mix of pheromone trails that are either controlled by Ivy after deployment or are naturally somehow able to surround the heads of their intended victims, only dissipating after the target as breathed in some of the presumably fragrant trails through their nostrils. The effects are immediately noticeable though, with Batman having to shake himself into some semblance of level-headedness and Robin immediately becoming blissed-out.

Her first volley of her new love dust puts the whole ball under her spell, not only making her entrance noticeable and unquestioned, but also putting her ahead of the competition in the bidding in the form of the flower girls. Her extra doses on the heroes at close-quarters make them more likely to fight over her after she uses some heavy flirting.

After putting in the groundwork, Ivy can stand back and let the situation play itself out, if one of the heroes win it’s an excuse to get them alone. But as long as they fight over her and Ivy sets up a divide, both are easy pickings later on when they split up, ideally still under the effects of her pheromones where their desire for her is still strong and a kiss with either hero will eliminate one of her threats at her leisure.

However, the opportunities for kisses don’t seem to materialise, the heroes leaving before she can capitalise on their hormones, while the numbers and violent nature of the Gollum Gang make it more efficient to goad them into fighting her bodyguard. Notably, after this costume, Ivy is much more proactive at creating her opportunities to kiss, either through impatience, realising that the longer game has more opportunities to fail, or a combination of both.

(French dub to English)

In the native French dub, Laurence Crouzet's Ivy softly charms Robin to her throne, her gentle disposition never faltering.

Notably, the term Robin uses for doting/flirting is conter fleurette which may be a method of sneaking in a plant pun, though Ivy's mention of a lawn to water seems a little strange, maybe I'm mistranslating or missing context?

(Hungarian dub to English)

Erika Balogh brings a playful Ivy to the Hungarian dub of Batman and Robin, confidently ensnaring the hero before softening her delivery with a purr as she delivers her toxic kiss, and gently giving him the bad news afterwards, even going as far to infantalize him.

The moniker Ivy takes in the film is literally Poison Kiss, and she doesn't beat around the bush when it comes to securing her long-awaited kiss with the Boy Wonder, eagerly proposing a passionate kiss will be enough to convince him that her intentions are sincere once he joins her in her bower.

(Portuguese dub to English)

Miriam Ficher voices Ivy for the second iteration of the Portuguese dub, for Wan Macher. Her take on the villainess is quietly confident and smooth, softly pulling the hero along before dropping into mock sadness after deploying her poisonous kiss.

A notable adaptation is her answer to Robin's request for a sign, wjich in this case is "keep off the grass" which fits her theme a little more than the original, albeit being less suggestive.

(German Dub to English)

Petra Barthel offers a confident, unashamed and bawdy version of Ivy, lacing her dialogue with cheekiness and suggestiveness that borders on teasing and shows her playfully leading Robin on, confident that whatever she says will reel him in. Dialogue-wise, the beats are mostly the same, though Robin's reveal has him using an idiom that usually refers to using a condom, a bit more of an adult touch than the original.

(Italian Dub to English)

Voiced by Roberta Greganti, Ivy in the Italian dub is softly spoken and sincere, from her greeting as she calls Robin "honey" to her taunting post-kiss, playing on the illusion of being besotted with him from start to finish. Notably there is no double-entendre in the exchange when she would usually suggest a sign, instead inferring that she has no real need to prove anything. Secondly, Ivy also uses "pettirosso" (robin in italian) as a pet name for Robin, which makes sense as the his name itself isn't translated, but when translated back into English it's obsolete.

Nuria Mediavilla plays Ivy with a breathy, seductive delivery that is laced with gentle and confident suggestion, her response to Robin's request for a sign being more direct than the original with the promise of a steamy encounter.

Most Video and Varus Video share the same dialogue, with Marina Dyuzheva in Most having a rather seductive, breathy delivery, and Lyubov Germanova in Varus having a more playful, teasing take on the same script. Notably Robin comes across a little more nervous in the latter with shaky breath punctuating his lines.

"For the seduction scene, the neckline of Ivy's suit is scooped out, and these kind of demented, wired leaves are crawling up her chest. And in the beginning of the scene, the suit is covered in spider-lace negligees, veils and sequins, which imparts a mad kind of Arabian Nights feeling. The challenge was, 'Can we get enough sequins on this thing to compete with her outrageous giant flower bed?'"

"I've always been impressed by European turn-of-the-century bathhouses, which had some very extraordinary and far-out architecture." Barbara Ling

"That was the seed for Poison Ivy's lair, which is a ruined, abandoned Gotham bathhouse, with Joel adding the Arabian/Turkish element as consistent with Ivy's exoticism. The ceiling, which consists of holes encased in pods, was inspired by a Moscow subway station.

The bathhouse is seen in three distinct phases... finally, in outrageous, over-the-top full growth when Ivy attempts to seduce Robin. The moat is full, there are lily pads so large that Robin can walk on them and huge fan leaves that open magically, which we created from dyed native pampas grass. Ivy has also created a gigantic orchid bed that opens up into a kind of venomous trap for Batman and Robin, operated from outside the set by ten puppeteers with joysticks."

In South America, Dr. Woodrue seals the deal to the Bane formula. As he hangs up the phone, a patch of ivy on the wall behind him slowly begins to move.

Suddenly, the leaves rustle and a green figure bursts from beneath the brush: A beautiful woman in torn clothes, her hair a burning magenta, her skin a lush white, and her eyes a brilliantly deep green.

"Dr. Isley? You look great-though you're supposed to be dead."

"I've had a change of heart," says the scientist, kissing Woodrue. "The animal-plant toxins you dumped on me had an unusual effect," she continues.

"They replaced my blood with chlorophyll and filled my lips with poison."

R "Do you only have have good hands for plants?"

"My skin, with chlorophyl" softly charms the reborn Isley as she brings one hand under Woodrue's chin as she gazes down at him dotingly, her hand bringing his face up so his eyes meet hers, Jason complying with her newfound affections with equal amounts of giddy obedience and stifling confusion. He is literally putty in her hands.

"And filled..." purrs Ivy as she basks in her mesmerising aura, her other hand now also tenderly reaching underneath his chin. With his face now cradled in both gentle hands as they pull him upwards towards her, Jason can only stutter and stammer, mouth puckering in the air like a goldfish as Pamela's sudden forwardness catches him off guard.

"...My lips..."

Ivy continues her soothing introduction, before relishing in a long, sensual moan as Jason begins to kiss the air.

The woman is a far cry from the mousey scientist from before, her hair is dishevelled, with vines of ivy messily nestled in it's magenta tangles, the same plants wrap around her form, the ravages of her transformation leaving her clothes in tatters, with just a torn pair shorts and vest preserving her modesty and leaving little to Jason's imagination. With sweat beading on her skin and flecks of soil covering her feet and under her nails, she is the epitome of a primal goddess, wild and untamed as the hair that cascades over her shoulders

Jason Woodrue falls to his knees as the woman before him stretches as if she had a long nap, she acknowledges him with a confused groan, before giving him a playful moan, giggling as she gazes down at him.

"Hello, Jason" purrs the newly risen goddess as pink light bathes her glorious form, the smoke that once streamed from the ground now diffusing. Her voice is smooth, seductive, confident. Both comforting and arousing. A far cry from the demure woman who was pushed into a slurry of vegetation and toxins before.

"...I think I've had a change of heart" she adds, breathily, her eyes suddenly lighting up as the last word escapes her lips, planting a seed of hope and desire deep within Jason's own heart as he gazes up at the woman before him.

The english version mentions a "Change of heart" which has a double meaning, the casual definition meaning a change of opinion, but the way Ivy uses and delicately accentuates the word "heart" puts an emphasis on romance and that her sudden change is more to do with her attraction to Jason than anything else. This is common with Ivy as a good deal of her lines have dual meanings.

This is, however, lost in some subtitle translations as a good deal of them just mention a change in opinion. There are some outliers though:

Croatian- "Srce mi je uzdrhtalo."

My heart is trembling.

Czech- "Já umírám touhou."

I'm dying of desire.

French- "Je crois que j'ai eu un coup de coeur."

I think I've had a blow to the heart.

Italian- "Penso di essere cambiata radicalmente."

I think I have changed dramatically.

Spanish- "Creo que tuve un cambio en lo más hondo del corazón."

I think I had a change in the depths of my heart.
