DAY 7 GALLERY INCLUDING PRESENTATIONS
Mexico retained the men’s title with a surprisingly comfortable win over Colombia, who last won the title in the ‘07 PanAm Games while Mexico had won five times since then.
Alfredo Avila was too sharp for Juan Camilo Vargas tonight, and Cesar Salazar had the measure of Miguel Rodriguez, forcing the world #5 into some desperate retrieving and getting the better of most of the exchanges at the front of the court.
Salazar finished the first two games the better, and after taking an early lead in the third Rodriguez seemed to accept the inevitable as his challenge faded.
The USA women’s team, with the individual silver and gold medalists up first, always looked favourites to beat Canada and so it proved as Sabrina and Amanda Sobhy - who also won the doubles - both winning in straight games to give USA their fifth title in six years and twelfth overall.
For Amanda the win meant a hat-trick of Gold medals, and a week without conceding a game!
DAY 7 GALLERY INCLUDING PRESENTATIONS
The final day was all bout finishing positions, but the Argentina v Brasil women’s clash for 7th/8th place had special significance - the winner would claim the last spot in next year’s Pan American Games in Lima, Peru (the top eight qualify but the absent Peru automatically qualify as hosts).
The match went to a decider, with Argentina ultimately claiming 7th and the Games spot
Games Qualifying : you qualify as a Country, top 12 men and top 8 women, allowing you to enter individual, doubles and team events, and finishing here contribute to Games seedings.
