Tubby Boots- Sister Bear Music Video

We are really excited to announce the first music video ever for Tubby Boots. It was directed and edited by Gabriel Swan Pearlman from the band bikos with additional help from Kenneth Rudnicki. This was filmed at Breakfest with many of the attendees and our friends participating. Check it.

Art by Jenny Yu This Saturday will be the fifth time that we have hosted the Breakfest Music & Arts Festival. The show started as a way to celebrate local bands and as an excuse to eat (like we need an excuse to eat???) Over the years, the festival has grown in number and in the amount of performers. In the past, it has taken place in the backyard of various houses. This year we decided to move it to a larger and more public forum. We feel like we have put together a great lineup with many solid and diverse bands. For a quick history, the breakdown of breakfest is pretty simple. The idea was spawned out of Derek and Alex Humphrey's love of breakfast foods and music festivals. Take the break(fast) and (fest)ival and bam! You've got Breakfest. Bringing two of the best things in the world together. Everything about breakfest is free including the pancakes! This is a celebration of good local bands and good pancakes made by Peter Zasadny. The festival starts at 11:30 and ends at 9:00. Pancakes are served all day. It is taking place at the bandshell at Recreation Park in Long Beach at the intersection of 7th street and Park, right across the street from the Starbucks. There is a ton of street parking in the area.

Tubby Boots - Old Man EP

We are really excited to finally release these songs to the public. For the past couple years, we've been working diligently to build a studio from the ground up. We converted an old, beat-up garage into a home studio, built our own equipment, and even repaired and restored an old MCI tape machine from CBS Records. Last summer our great friend, Dave Jones from the band bikos, came down on a Friday night to our studio to help engineer this session. We set up our equipment and ran through a practice take of Lifetime Gutterbug that ended up being the only take we did of that song. We spent the entire next day recording a total of 10 songs. For this release, we chose a short, two-song EP consisting of Sister Bear and Lifetime Gutterbug. We put a lot of hard work into capturing what we think is our sound. To accomplish this, we tracked everything live with the exception of the vocals. It has been our dream for many years to record to tape and we were lucky enough be able to do it that way. Dave was an utterly amazing engineer. He kept us on track with his enthusiasm and encouraging presence. He gave us the push to actualize and finally release these tracks. The mantra we adopted from him was "Why reinvent the wheel?" He had an immense impact on us and we wouldn't have been able to do it without him. Hopefully you friends enjoy the recordings. They were a lot of hard work but we are really happy with how they turned out in the end. This is just the start of "post-Florentine" Tubby Boots. We have at least one more release planned for this summer, more yet in the fall and some shows to follow starting with BreakFest 2013.

I'd Hate Me Too

Hello from Berlin!!! Pancakes House Studios is proud to present “I’d Hate Me Too”, Struckout’s first release. This project is the brainchild of Daniel Speer-bass & lyrics/vocals, Marcus Clayton- guitar, and James Goldmann- drums bang bang bang. We are very thankful to have had the opportunity to work with this band. Daniel is an *extremely* passionate artist and his fervor of emotional genuinity is apparent in his lyrics and performance. Marcus and James are champions of musicianship and patience. They provide and accentuate the raw intuitiveness that perfectly harmonizes Speer’s triggers of intensity. Making Cents

This is an extremely interesting article that was written on Pitchfork by the members of a band called Galaxy 500. In the past twenty years, most bands have not made money on their records. They make money from playing shows, and selling merchandise. If you really love a band, go to their shows and buy their t-shirts. The article is a really great example of why we stream all of our music for free here. The most interesting part is that he still uses programs to stream music, because in the end, the most important part is the music itself.

John Albert - First Official Pancakes House Release

http://johnalbert.bandcamp.com/ This session is from last December. Almost a year ago! Although it seems like it was just yesterday. John had a ton of ideas floating around in his head and felt like it was finally time to organize them, so he flew out here from Seattle to record with me for a week. Every day we would wake up, have a wonderful breakfast (no pun intended), and then start recording for the day. This was definitely one of my favorite sessions I have ever been a part of. It was almost completely stress free and one of the only times that everything worked out as planned. I don't have an exact way of describing these songs. I hear a bit of Neil Young, a bit of Radiohead, a bit of Dave Bazan, but a ton of John Albert. John explained to me that this is his California version of his songs. It seems like whenever he comes out here, the first thing we want to do is start throwing feedback and noise into his music. If you listen to anything he records up north, it tends to be a bit more mellow. The second he gets down to Long Beach, we break out the drums and start smashing shit. Working with John is an absolute pleasure. He is extremely talented and his songs are beautiful pieces of art. We both hope to record again by next summer.

BreakFest next Saturday

BreakFest (Prounounced Brek-Fest) is our annual event that we host once a summer. It is an all day music festival where we serve pancakes, eggs, sausage, and other breakfast delicacies. "Break" for the breakfast foods, "Fest" for the festival part. It's free admission and starts at 12:00PM and ends around 9:00PM. This year we have a pretty badass lineup and it is going to be a lot of fun.

Bass Trapping The Studio

Sometimes I think that we are fucking crazy. We (Peter, Alex, and I [and Eric on the last batch]) started this bass trap endeavor a few weeks ago. Of course the day that we decide to actually start making them, it looked like it was going to rain. And of course the second that we started making them, it actually started to rain. And of course the second that we finished making them, it stopped raining.

Meet Chris

This is Chris. He is the newest member of our band. Thanks to Peter and Eric for all of the help building this mofo.

Chris is an Optical Analog Compressor that uses tubes to compress the audio signal. It was originally designed by Analag and Volker on the groupdiy forums. Peter and I built the case out of an old Mitsubishi 5 disc cd changer that we bought from Goodwill for $15. We gutted it and then drilled a bunch of holes and bent a bunch of metal. Kyle wrote all of the lettering on the front with his robot handwriting, and then Peter, Eric, and I sprayed it with some Krylon Acrylic spray. It feels really smooth and sounds really good. There are two different types of tubes and they are all matched between each other and both channels since it's a stereo unit. Oh yeah, and fuck that Antek power transformer. The input and output transformers are Edcor WSMs. I'm thinking about changing them to Lundahls at some point in the future. Our next project is either going to be a stereo 1176 Revision A, or a Telefunken ELAM 250 tube microphone.

Our New Toys

Over the weekend, we went up to Sun Valley, California with a trailer and picked up these machines. Both need some work to get up and running but are in very good condition otherwise. The 24 track is going to be our primary machine for recording. Can't wait to start tracking with it. MCI JH-16 24 Track Recorder

Messing Around in the Studio
