part 9

another funny moment ft. william van dort, who actually seems like the best parent out of four of them:

in the movie the reason behind emily’s and victor’s marriage being invalid is that death has already parted them apart. however, in the script the reason is different:

also, in the script, following mayhew’s death, victor’s parents have an accident:

AND WE’VE HAD EMILY MEETING VICTOR’S PARENTS:

i love how william is just going with it without a second thought. AND here we are finally getting to know emily’s last name:

as the final scene approaches, we have another plot twist coming:

here we also have a different version of how emily found out that barkis killed her, they weren’t lovers, she didn’t randomly remember him.

victoria is such a girlboss.

in this version barkis doesn’t die, instead he’s taken by the police. i actually like the movie version, where he gets a taste of his own actions and drinks the poison.

the ending is also a lot more different than it is in the movie, emily is more quiet, she goes alone, finally at peace.

it’s really a shame that the movie robbed us off of some moments where we could really look into some characters (e.g. how sassy victor was) because we can actually see how they really are. reading the original, i was suprised by how vain and cruel mrs van dort actually is (and how hilarious william is, i feel like he was originally written to be some sort of comedic relief)

in the movie, when victor and emily ‘’haunt’’ the land of the living they can touch everything just fine, they’re totally touchable? however, in the script they are described as ghosts, which, to me, honestly feels more like something ‘’ukrainian haunting spell’’ would do.

and so, instead of climbing the walls of victoria’s house, he ends up... floating.

i love how victoria didn’t scream when she saw emily but only when victor told her that emily’s dead and shook her arm:

yes i had to.

moving on.

and so the next song comes on, the first version of tears to shed and, again, i will put both songs for you to compare:

in the original script, victoria doesn’t run away alone, she’s actually with hildegarde. as we can see, she always has her back!

i think one of the reasons hildegarde likes victoria so much (beside the girl’s innocence) is her honesty. according to hildegarde, who must spend a lot of time with victoria, she never lied:

part 7 (again, reminder that english is not my first language so if there are any mistakes don’t be afraid to tell me and i will fix it : )) 

agokay, so now i’m going to focus on the original script of the movie and there will be a few posts about it.

in original play, victoria’s parents describe her as ‘’ugly as an otter’’.

which is obviously not true.

remember the scene where victor accidentally knocks over a small vase? in the movie, he instantly puts it back into its original position, but in the original script: 

just... just victor being a nervous mess:

in the original script, lord barkis is... well, not a lord, but everglot’s lawyer:

also, in the final scene where victor runs away, everyone, except finis everglot, faints:

in the movie he runs away from her, however, in the original script... he faints (there’s a lot of fainting):

now, we all know the one and only remains of the day. here’s a lyrics comparison: 

as we know from movie’s version of the song, emily was killed by an unknown man (unknow to her) while waiting for her lover. in the original script her death is quite different and more accurate to the original stories burton was inspired by, where young jewish/russian (just slavic-jewish i think) girls were murdered on their way to where their wedding was taking place. 

however, in the original script emily is said to be killed by thieves who wanted to steal her gold and jewels as she rode through woods for her wedding. her coach was surrounded by robbers, who strangled the poor girl. the bride’s wedding day was the day of her death. 

i don’t think i’ve mentioned that, but victoria is actually one year older than victor. they’re 19 and 20.

and victor is also a lot more sassy. and, of course, allergic to artichokes. if that matters.

and now a dialogue i found funny bc its my shitpost and i can do whatever i want:

in the original script, when victor enters the forest after he ran away from the church, it is said that he feels followed. he brushed it off, thinking that he must feel this way because of the crows above him. later:

it’s said that he’s strangely touched. i would be creeped out, but okay.

let’s talk abou the names. 

just by their matching names, victor and victoria seem like a perfect match. i think i saw somewhere that burton named them like that just to enhance their bond. they were meant for each other, literal soulmates.

we know that the movie pretty much revolves around love triangle.

emily’s name, if to believe the symbolism, sets this to another level. we all know that she’s pretty much the blueprint of another woman trope, but also her name states that she literally is. 

i’m not making her a villain here, by the way. i love her, don’t worry.

back to victor and victoria. i feel like we’re all aware of the origin of their names.

i know that tim burton really likes this name but when you look at the story... well, it fits. victor and victoria were meant to be, they are the real winners.

say what you want about emily she didn’t make the same mistake twice. 

waiting killed her once. 

even if she couldn’t get killed again because, well, she was already dead - she didn’t wait this time. she went after him right after she got anxious.

part 4

SO, WE ARE GOING TO BE DOING MORE SYMBOLISM HERE. i love it.

during the movie, we can see a lot of crows. in fact, they may appear to be following victor, especially in the beginning. 

now, let’s look at the symbolism. because, stereotypically, we all know that it’s a pretty dark themed bird, but the spiritual (?) meaning is also interesting and, of course, fits the story:

i also found something that’s written in my native language, so i’m just going to translate it 😭 you have to pretty much believe my word that it’s an actual article or something.

it basically states that crows are guides of souls (as they are pretty much linked to cemeteries and death) and their job is to lead the souls to the afterlife/land of the dead (whatever you believe in) OR the other way. but while guiding a soul back to earth they make it just so they can fix something, give the living a peace, kinda mend their sins. 

so, they can pretty much travel between the worlds.

we can also notice that in the movie - the crows are visible not only in the land of the living, but also in the land of the dead.

and the fact that its egg gave them [emily and victor] the ability to go back? it just fits.

okay, let’s mention one more tree.

also, in slavic countries (don’t worry guys i know what’s up i’m slavic myself) (story is mostly based on a slavic-jewish legend) the birch tree stands for spring (new beginnings) and young women. they were being planted near houses to attract protective spirits and shoo away the evil ones. 

okay, now onto the butterfly.

(i feel like victor setting free a butterfly is a nice foreshadowing lol)

a butterfly stands for soul, change, transformation, lightness, beauty, freedom. pretty self explanatory.

 i feel like victor setting free a butterfly in the beginning of a movie gains a new meaning when emily admits that he kept his promise ( ‘’that she'd wait for her true love to come set her free’’, remains of the day) and she’s able to leave the world at peace.

part 3 

okay, this is also something i’ve realized after years (probably beacuse my english got better lol) and it made the story even more dark for me. 

okay, so this young girl gets killed while waiting for her fiance, who later turned out to be the real murderer. we all know how the story goes. at first glance, at least. the key is pretty much hidden between the words (OR IT WAS FOR ME BECAUSE OF ME BEING NON-NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKER LOL). (yes i will point it out please go easy on me if there are any mistakes in my writing i’m just a baby)

the thing about emily’s death is that it took much longer than it first seemed. barkis didn’t immediately kill her, he probably only heavily wounded her (we could see that he was pretty good with using a sword, so the most popular theory is that she was stabbed - ... and later got a deja vu because he stabbed her again as she was shielding victor...) and then left the poor girl to die.

also, let’s take a look at the tree she died under - oak. 

i know i’m probably reading too much into this, but i feel like it just fits in with the story and makes it even more powerful. I’M HAVING FUN ANALYZING, OKAY?! 

as we can see, the oak tree is ,,[..] associated with longevity, strength, [..] endurance, [..] power, justice [...]’’. seems powerful, am i right? and so, the words or actions that are being performed under this particular tree just feel like they are more potent. great tree to make a big promise under.

emily, aware of her cruel fate made a vow. she wished for someone to love and marry her, for someone to set her free [from her pain]. the fact that she did that laying under an oak tree make her words even more mighty now, knowing the symbolism.

for years i thought that mayhew died before he even fell off his seat but i just noticed that he has wheel marks on his body, which leads to another option of what really caused his death: he got ran over by his own carriage.

in a scene where victor and emily haunt the land of the living after elder gutknecht performed a ukrainian haunting spell on them only victor has footsteps, as he is still alive and has a permanent/still form (?) (i’m not sure how to say that in english sorry it’s not my first language). 

emily is basically a ghost in this scene.
