Indulgences
After a stressful day, I bought a box of chocolate covered pretzels. They cost almost $4. I started to think about how that was almost a whole day expense for food and I can’t move past it. Buying one thing for enjoyment could mean that I starve another day for that decision. After eating the chocolate, I realized it wasn’t worth it --Lexi

Labor Day Weekend on SNAP
So the past few days I learned that I’m extremely thankful for my generous friends and family. Holiday weekends are often times when groups of people get together and share meals. Many people shared food with me this weekend. They offered; I did not have to ask. However, I am a very independent person and although I was very appreciative, I felt a little bit guilty.
The meals I prepared for myself have been very basic. I’m thinking more about rationing, and trying to plan for the weeks ahead with the food I have. I’m eating for fuel, not taste or enjoyment. -Lexi

So easy to eat by the handful. So addictive. This is dangerous knowledge. If you haven’t yet been introduced to this snack, please allow me to do the honors. Here is our step-by-step recipe for roasting chickpeas in the oven.
Roasted chickpeas are a tasty, nutritious snack that’s easy and inexpensive to make. If you have spices and olive or vegetable oil, the only expense is $.75 - $1 / can for chickpeas/garbanzo beans. These are also a great addition to salads, pasta or rice to add protein and make them more filling!
Day 2
I am lucky enough to be able to make choices when it comes to food, and many of these choices are made without much thought. I choose to buy the nutrient-dense multi-grain bread for $4 instead of the sliced white bread for $1.50. I choose to throw a cookie in the cart for later. I choose to look up an adventurous recipe for whatever sounds tasty and let that guide my shopping.
This week I had far less control over my choices – I bought ears of corn because they were on sale for $.25 each, and that was one of my only produce purchases. I skipped the Honeycrisp apples because they were $3.99 a pound. When a single apple takes up 10% of your weekly food budget, there’s not much of a choice to be made. - Chrissy
Day 1
The night before the challenge began, I took the time to pack up a breakfast and lunch to take to work. The next morning, I took it out of my fridge, but it on my entryway table, and then forgot to grab it when I walked out the door.
Off to a rough start! Fortunately, I work for a company that graciously provides catered breakfast options for their employees (thanks, PB). Bread + cream cheese + coffee was my breakfast. For lunch, I had a small bag of trail mix that I had grabbed at a meeting the previous day and never ate.
By the time I got home, I was starving. I scarfed down the PB & J sandwich that was intended for lunch, along with a snack of a few wheat thins and cheese.
This is going to be a long month. -Lexi
Here we go! I’m planning to make two trips dividing my $130 monthly budget in half(ish) on this first trip. It took me forever to shop! I went to Wal*Mart because it is pretty cheap, but I don’t go there often, so I don’t know my way around. I found myself spending tons of time comparing products and prices. I had to search down aisles I usually don’t visit.
The biggest difference for me is produce. Usually, I spend tons of money on fresh produce, but frozen is cheaper and lasts longer, so that’s what I opted for.
I also had to get really creative. I had to think about how I could use certain items multiple times, or buy items that I could get more than one meal out of. All and all, I think I did really good with the amount of food I got, but there is little variety or freshness.
