i really love that project hail mary made it so clear how much grace loves earth. describing it to rocky, showing him bits of the culture and nature. the water and the cities. the birds. he sincerely and deeply loves earth.

you don't even have a dog. he had a whole planet. he loved being alive on earth and they took that from him.

thinking abt grace becoming fluent in eridian. thinking about eridian as an information-dense and layered language. thinking about the ability to create new words out of layered sounds and the way you can quickly describe a complicated relationship in eridian. grace practicing on his organ for speaking eridian, sounding out the tones for boss/leader and friend/companion and murderer until they blend into a single word.

and that’s how eva stratt gets her eridian name, which she will never know.

thinking about this more, and I think for my fic I'm gonna make her name the eridian equivalent of

"Bone Setter"

trusted (if intimidating) authority figure (doctor), who's sent to cure what's hurting you (planet threatening astrophage infection), and doing the job that's needed will hurt you, maybe even break you — but it's what's needed to grow back stronger

She was willing to kill him, but it was a betrayal that gave him the opportunity to become brave

Broken carapace is even scarier because they're suddenly vulnerable to infection (coma with 2/3 fatality rate?). The doctor might have to pack the chipped carapace with new mineral material to repair it — leaving their permanent mark that you carry with you the rest of your life

Okay but imagine being the team of Eridian scientists tasked with keeping Erid's Only Human alive for as long as possible while the whole planet's environment is literally trying to kill him. And then Rocky shows up and is like:

“Grace says he would like half of dome to be water.”

“Oh, is necessary for humans to have large amounts of water question?”

Small Eridian equivalent of a sigh. “No. Not needed for life. In fact Grace will die if he falls in water and does not get out.”

“Tell him we give him water in containers that won't kill him. Lots lots lots of water on Erid for Grace to drink.”

“No. Grace say he want water on ground. Also want it with excess sodium chloride compound so it will be unhealthy for drink.”

“WHY QUESTION???”

To celebrate Erid getting their sun back on track, Grace asks for some alcohol. There's a small amount left from the Hail Mary and Rocky offers to take it to the science Eridians to see if they can synthesise more.

“Grace want this liquid for celebration.”

“Of course.” They scan it. “You have wrong liquid. This contain compounds which are poisonous for humans.”

“Yes yes yes. Grace say humans like feeling of being slightly poisoned.”

“WHY QUESTION?????”

Grace is like one of those extremely finicky tropical fish who instantly die if not kept in extremely specific conditions.

Iirc the book said the Eridians estimated it took about a year for Earth to get the Taomoeba to Venus. I propose that in the movie 9 months of that was watching the documentary footage to find out what the weird test tube was for and then the last 3 was slapping the delivery vehicle together as fast as possible with duct tape and spit The Martian style.

Goddamit i hate this fucking post. I hate it because obviously if “twelve” followed the same pattern as the other teen numbers it wouldn’t be “twoteen” it would be “seconteen”. Think about it. It’s not “threeteen” it’s “thirteen” as in “third”. It’s not “fiveteen” it’s “fifteen” as in fifth. So with that in mind, you count “first, second, third, fourth, fifth,” and so on, so eleven would be “firsteen” and twelve would be “secondteen” or “seconteen”. “Firsteen, seconteen, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen….” It just drives me absolutely mad everytime i see this post that this obvious pattern was overlooked and i cant hold in my rage anymore.

You can tell this film was made with so much love and passion just from all the little details. Like the 3D board replicating everything Grace has written on the white board so the children can see! So cool
