Hi! I just found your blog and I’d like to know what qualifies as being asexual and/or aromantic. I have been questioning ever since the beginning of junior high as everyone talked about crushes and dating and I had never felt anything like that. I’m 15 now and my 13 year old cousin getting a boyfriend is bringing a lot of these feelings back. Honestly, no matter how hard I try I have this intense feeling as if something is wrong with me for never feeling these types of emotions. Sorry it’s long

Hello !For starters, in the simplest terms, asexuality is the lack of sexual attraction and aromanticism is the lack of romantic attraction. That said, they are both a spectrum. You can experience attraction conditionally, occasionally, not at all, etc. and still be on the ace spectrum. If you haven’t felt any attraction yet it’s very possible that you could be on the spectrum. These kinds of things can be hard to label so just know that you never *have* to label yourself, it’s all up to you. Also, i’m sorry it took so long to answer this! I’ve been pretty busy lately. National Coming Out Day is coming up (October 11) and I just want to remind everyone:

1) Please do not out anyone (even if you “think you are doing them a favor.” Trust me when I say you aren’t) and make sure you don’t accidentally do so.

2) It is okay to be in the closet. Please do not feel pressure to/obligated to come out because there so happens to be a Coming Out Day. (Do it for you if it’s what you want).

3) If you are a non-lgbt, please don’t come out as a joke. seriously, don’t.

I might not be able to wear a binder for any length of time anymore, but you bet your ass I’m putting it on before I get my haircut so I can get those sweet sweet men’s prices.

Living outside a small town means that whenever I get my haircut, I have to roleplay to the stylist. The first time I went in, she thought I was a 15 year old boy, and even though I go there only every eight months or so, she somehow remembers me and thinks I am now entering my senior year of high school. I have to tell her my college aspirations and favorite classes and if I’m going to prom with a nice girl.

It’s The Worst™ and she’s always telling me how my hair is just too pretty for a boy, and telling everyone else in the room to admire my beautiful hair and cluck in envy that a boy should be blessed with such curls.

I don’t know how to get out of this incredibly awkward situation.

How do I know if I'm aromantic? I mean, I've never been in love, but I'm not even sure what aromanticism means (I know the definition ofc, but still???) ah I don't even know...

It’s a very hard thing to know for sure, because you’re trying to find the absence of something. What made me realize was the idea that my perfect relationship is “forever roommates.” All I wanted with any “crush” I thought I had had was the same kind of stuff that I do with my best friends

Have you had any crushes before? If not, there’s a fair bet you’re aromantic. If so, take a closer look on your feelings for them. You shouldn’t have to consciously choose a crush. You probably would want to do things with them that you wouldn’t do with a close friend. Note that just having a strong bond with someone doesn’t make a crush, platonic relationships can feel pretty strong

Like I said before, it’s hard to know, even for someone who’s been identifying as aro for quite awhile. In my opinion the best thing is to just not worry about the label and focus on exactly what it is that you’re feeling. For example, I tell some people that I’m just not into anyone and don’t really want to date. Maybe something like that would work for you. Just be who you are and let the rest come with time.
