We all make fun of how Kaito responded to Maki's confession in ch5's post trial by basically not responding at all but to be honest I think his acknowledgement of her crush on him without explicitly reciprocating might've been the kindest way to handle it. I think it would've been so much more painful for Maki if he had said he felt the same way, cause then she would've been forever haunted by what could have been between them, and how they had literally only minutes to engage in these feelings with each other. And Obviously if he didn't feel the same way, saying so would've absolutely crushed her. Suggesting that her crush on him was a good thing without explicitly responding to it was a shockingly elegant and gentle move on Kaito's part. AND he was minutes away from dying. oh my god.
