Hey ADs! Did you have any experience where an artist that made a bad impression (or for greater effect, an initial bad reputation) managed to turn things around and ended up being one of great working relationships you've had? If so, how did they do it and what made you stick with them despite odds?

As far as meeting/networking goes, there are plenty of artists who make bad first impressions (either with personality/professionalism or with the quality of their work). But if I see them again and they’ve improved I always revise my opinion.

In the case of a bad impression once you’re on a job, people have repaired things gone poorly by later apologizing and owning their mistake, by which I mean they acknowledged what they did wrong in a way that made it obvious to me that they understood what went wrong and I was sure they wouldn’t make the same mistake again. They didn’t try to excuse or deflect blame, they just accepted it and said they learned that lesson and were ready to move on. Sometimes it’s less risky to go with someone who’s fucked up and you’re pretty sure has learned their lesson (and are eager to correct that impression) than a person who you’ve never worked with before.

In you answer about the Loish case, I can understand how she can work in concept art since her art is something happening behind the scenes. But for editorial illustration and book covers? Those things are right the face of a targeted audience. The way that you explained your point, it still sounds like I can send my portfolio to just about anyone even if it doesn't seem to be the right fit...

I…can’t recall any agent at any point advocating artists send their portfolios to all ADs regardless of needs, aaaand I’m pretty sure you already knew that wasn’t the right approach, so I’m not really sure what your question is. 

BUT. Here’s some recent posts on getting your art in front of the right people, and how the shotgun approach is the wrong way to go about things.

Alsoooooo a great factor that might be missed here is that Loish is a big name and has a huge following to begin with. She need not throw her portfolio to every single AD despite conflicting style/genre to land a job (anyone shouldn’t to begin with, that’s a nuisance at best), the company might have even reached out to her first. Only a few can afford to be contacted that, and certainly not just any new name wanting to land a foot in a great project.

Lately I haven't been able to enjoy painting to the point that I stopped creating. I then saw SasakiSaski's tutorial and the reference reminded me of the very first painting I did on the tablet. Wanting to regain that sense of enjoyment, I tried retracing my steps back to my earlier days and did a small study of the same photo reference; just to keep it simple and tune out that crippling feeling of trying to perfect every single thing. I normally don’t finish sketches/artwork (lol) but as thank you to my new followers and to those who reblogged and liked the previous mori girl sketch (she actually looks more on the natural kei of the spectrum), I took the plunge and finished it!
