Nora and Marie Louise, two lesbian characters added 7 seasons in to The Vampire Diaries to give the show some much needed diversity, were killed off today via suicide.
Juli Plec, creator of this show, decided that the best way for her only two LGBT representing characters on this show to go, was for them to KILL THEMSELVES, despite the fact that LGBT youth are at extreme risk of suicide.
White straight male characters like Matt and Alaric, who do nothing for the plot and are fucking HUMAN, can survive, yet two lesbian VAMPIRES can’t?
What kind of message does this send to LGBT youth? Why must we always see ourselves die on television again and again and again?
Haven’t we had enough? We live our real lives suffering for who we are. We face violence both emotional and physical for something we cannot change. Many of us escape to television forget about the homophobia we face in our real lives. We live vicariously through these LGBT characters.
But we can’t anymore. Because we know we’re just going to see ourselves die on screen too.
I am SICK AND TIRED of this fucking trope. This has gotten ridiculous. FIVE lesbian characters have already died in little over a month, and two more are planned to be killed off soon too. Not to count the history of LGBT character’s that have already been killed off for years and years.
We hardly ever get to be represented, and when we do, we have to see ourselves get killed off. The media is constantly telling us that we are worthless and expendable. That the only thing we deserve is a tragic ending. This is the fucking message that they’re sending us and I for one am fucking PISSED about it.
Don’t stay silent. We’re never going to have change if we stay complacent. Speak out and let your voices be heard, that this is NOT okay.
