Silence has always been our mode of communication, my dad and I. Up until the last moments of his life, I chose silence and tears over using words to tell him how I feel, how I want him to stay strong and hold on for dear life. But as always, I chose to stay in the corner of his hospital room and cry in silence.Â
He never said anything about my silence. Instead he chose to ask quietly, gently, without fail if I was hungry, what I wanted to eat. That was how he made up for both of our lack of penchant for words. If silence was was one of the things that is considered a love language, it would definitely be ours, my dad and I. He never said anything about my silence, but I can only hope that when he was alive, it translated to my peace instead of indifference. I can only hope my silence was not a burden because god knows he had enough on his plate already.Â
I miss him, everyday. It has been seven years without him. Today is fatherâs day and the silence has never been this heavy.Â
