First Look : The Alphabet Series
We have been rather quiet lately and that’s because Boon Soon and I have had our hands full the last couple of weeks trying to meet our targeted dateline to reveal our most recent illustrated collection. With a sigh of relief, I’m proud to say …we’ve made it on time!
Now, a little about this series.
Seven months back, I embarked on journey to illustrate an alphabet a week. And this is the outcome after all those weeks.
The Alphabet Series is a collection of illustration inspired by the diversity and beauty of women and nature. Each alphabet is represented by portraiture of a female with flora and fauna which starts with that particular letter. Occasionally, beloved items from our cabinet of curiosities make it into the illustrations.
This project is dear to my heart as it celebrates the quintessential essence of being female. Playful, dramatic, bubbly, sensual or mysterious; the characteristics of women are as diverse and unique as the letters making up the alphabet. Yet, to turn single letters into meaningful words, there is a need for each letter to complement another.
Hence, while on its own each letter may represent the distinctive characteristics of a single female; as a whole, the series portrays the strong bond that binds all women together.
If you haven’t seen The Alphabet Series, follow us on facebook to get the first glimpse of the ‘alphabet of the day’ from now till we unveil the last letter “z”.
Stay tuned. We’ll keep you posted on our behind the scenes of this series soon.
love, P.

Chrysanthemum Dreams
In our previous post, we provided a glimpse into our step-by-step creative process in bringing our Chrysanthemum Dream Series into being. While telling you how getting inspired is part of our process, we left the bit out on the story behind this collection.
Inspired by the gentle folds of the chrysanthemum petals and likening it to the unique beauty of females, we came up with a poem.
This is our story.
The mysterious female, assumes countless forms; the echo of her beauty, unfolds like petals of chrysanthemums, gentle with meditative stance.
If you’re in love with this collection, you’ll be able to get your hands on them by clicking the title of each piece below.

Behind the scene.
If you have browsed through the repertoire of drawings and illustrations online, you would have been as awe struck as me. There is a list of amazing, amazing artist out there that I wish I could have a fraction of their talent. Yet, when it comes to art, there are so many styles and techniques applied by various artist that there simply is no way to judge which one is better than the other. It is simply a matter of personal taste and how each piece of art fits an individual and their own realm. That’s what makes us all unique!
While there are no right ways in illustrating, I’m here to share on how my creative process goes. I imagine that since cooking can be emulated through cook books, if illustrating was anything like cooking, here’s my step by step of how I created by Chrysanthemum Dreams series.
Ingredients:
Paper ( I used standard size 200gm acid-free A3 paper)
Pencils ( HB, 2B )
Pigment Ink Pen ( 0.1,0.2,0.5, 0.8)
Eraser
Brushes
Scanner
Adobe Photoshop
Chrysanthemum illustrations (my previous works)

Prep : a few days Sketch : 1 hr Ready In : 10 hrs _____________________________________________________________
Directions :
1. GET INSPIRED.
Getting inspired is the first step to any creative process. I am constantly inspired by uniquely composed fashion photograph, flowers and almost anything from my library of curiosities. Your inspiration can be anything. Bu remember it takes time to pull inspiration together reflect your vision on paper, so take time to source for the perfect inspiration.
2. PUT REFERENCES TOGETHER
While there are illustrators who turn to their own imagination for inspiration, I find mine at time from reference images. Once you have gathered sufficient references, pull them together and let’s get started.
3. PLAN HOW YOU WANT TO NARRATE YOUR STORY
I believe it’s always best to plan how and where each image goes to make your vision cohesive. Often times, you will have a story to narrate through your images. You know what they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words” .
4. START SKETCHING
Start sketching out your idea. I would occasionally print our references and draw rough lines for better understanding of scale and proportion. But if your intuition at scale and proportion is near perfect, you can start straight on sketching. Once your idea is out on paper, carefully erase off ubiquitous lines and you’re ready for the next tedious step.
5. BEGIN INKING
Refine the sketch by overlapping the desired lines- choose any point to start off. I usually begin this process with a 0.1 or 0.2 pen. For this illustration, I started off by inking the chrysanthemums then slowly develop depth of tone by changing to thicker nip pens (0.5 or 0.8). Alternate between pens if you must. Then slowly fill in the lines.
6. TAKE A BREATHER
This is a step not to be missed. You will need this break. Have a tea or coffee break and just take a step back to see how far you’ve come. Give yourself a pat on the back, then it’s back to work.
(*hint: you may need a few of these breaks)
7. CONTINUE INKING
Continue to fill the gaps between the lines until satisfied. Pay attention to details. You know you’re ready for the next step when you’re satisfied with the depth of tone and detail you put in.
8. SCAN YOUR WORK
It’s now time to move your completed illustration into the computer. Scan your work and don’t forget to keep a copy of the original before any Photoshop editing.
9. EDIT
Adjust contrast of your illustration to create your desired image depth. From your library collection, take our previous illustrations and pull them into your main work. Duplicate, transform, adjust and scale all images to achieve your desired composition.
Once you’re satisfied, it’s time to add a dash of colour. Using the brush tool, brush over the chrysanthemums with the colour of your choice. I toyed around a little with the effects section of respective layers.
10. ALMOST THERE
Finally, choose a background for your work to create the desired effect. It is up to your imagination. I scanned one of the ‘ginburi momigami’ textured origami paper (a gift from my Japanese host mother, Ayako Haruna).
11. JUMP FOR JOY
Before the ‘ta-da’ moment, remember to save your work! I would recommend saving one file in editable psd file and another in jpeg. Ta-da, now it’s a wrap.

Hello!
Hello there!
At PAPERPLAN, we embrace the design principles of less is more. In a world of boundless space and imagination, a piece of paper holds endless possibilities. When a blank sheet of paper beckon us, images flood into our minds- we sink into half forgotten memories, experiences and imagination.
We plan before we ink each piece of paper. We believe that with the right imagery, a piece of paper can do more than merely decorate. It is capable of captivating imagination, bringing a new sense of purposiveness. For delighting, surprising or simply transforming the ambiance of a space, our compulsion is to create a range of carefully designed products using the medium of photography and illustration for spaces and events that matters most to you.
We are delighted to be able to share inspirations and new interpretations of our reflections through our reservoir of much loved places, spaces and illustrations inspired by our scouting trips and cabinet of curiosities. Incessantly seeking new ideas and inspirations, our hearts and minds are always open to new possibilities. We'd love to keep in touch with you and are looking forward in joining forces to transform everyday objects into meaningful pieces by the simple presence of a unique design.
