Goodnight from Papersafe

It is time for Papersafe to come to an end.

Since the outset of this project in 2014, we knew we wanted it to have a limited lifespan and we feel as if four years and nine issues is a good ending point for our humble photography journal. Our recent participation at the Vancouver Art Book Fair–as invited speakers and exhibitors–was an incredible honor and we are happy to go out on such a high note. (You can view our talk and slideshow here: https://vimeo.com/240854447). While we could continue publishing Papersafe, ending it is an intentional choice, one that we’re content with making. It is better to burn out than fade away.

We are grateful to all of those who have supported us along the way, thankful to all of the photographers and writers (120 to be exact) who allowed us to publish their work, indebted to the guest editors (Carl Gunhouse, Jaclyn Wright, Elle Perez, Caitie Moore, Paolo Morales, Vivian Ewing) who generously donated their time and creative and mental energy to the publication, and honored to have been able to participate in a number of book fairs around the country (and in Canada!). A special thank you is in order to our Copy Editor and Photo Researcher, Annie Sollinger, who carefully combed through each issue before printing, assisted our writers, and helped us craft and realize our mission. There is no money in books, and even less in small-run magazine publishing, so it should go without saying that Papersafe was a labor of love.

Papersafe’s publisher and distributor, CatLABS of JP, will now be putting their resources and support behind a few new and exciting photography publications – She Shoots Film and PRYME Editions to name a few. If you're working on or publishing an analog-only project, don't hesitate to reach out to CatLABS of JP for support and/or promotion. We're always excited to learn about new projects, especially if they align with Papersafe's mission of promoting diversity and inclusion within the world of photography and small press publishing.

Past contributor Vivian Ewing approached us earlier this year wanting to curate an issue. We discussed a few of her ideas, and finally settled on the theme of “Other Eden.” The theme was designed to consider how people create ideal worlds and spaces when the outside world looks grim. This idea was partly sparked by the 2017 US presidential election, but the issue’s theme and inspiration are not limited to those recent events alone. In fact, this idea goes back much further and is tied to the systemic oppression of many people, from all over the world, throughout history. In other words: this is nothing new.

The issue brings together the work of twelve photographers and writers to examine the idea of this other Eden, and what it might look or feel like, from the point of view of the person living in it or creating it.

Vivian writes: Throughout human history, people have moved inside themselves to create spaces that have the beauty, safety or freedom that the outside world lacks. Many artists and writers create new landscapes in which to live and those who face the most hardships sometimes offer the most exciting alternatives. These visions of paradise come in endless forms: from fantastical gardens, to particular faces, to cities and towns that feel somehow familiar. The result is often achingly beautiful; within the ache is a reminder of why it was needed.

Call for Submissions – Issue #09: Other Eden, edited by Vivian Ewing

We are excited to announce that our 9th issue, Other Eden, will be edited by past Papersafe contributor Vivian Ewing, and will be released in October at the 2017 Vancouver Art Book Fair. We are currently seeking film-based submissions in response to the following prompt.

Vivian writes: Throughout human history, people have moved inside themselves to create spaces that have the beauty, safety, or freedom that the outside world lacks. Many artists and writers have created and continue to create new landscapes in which to live, but those who face the most strife sometimes offer the most exciting alternatives. These visions of paradise come in endless forms: from fantastical gardens, to a particular face, to cities and towns that feel somehow familiar. The result is often achingly beautiful; in the ache is a reminder of why it was needed.

The deadline for submissions is June 22, 2017.

SUBMISSION SPECIFICATIONS Images All images must be film-base or created with an analog process. Submit up to 10 images, approximately 8”x10” at 300dpi, in RGB mode, in JPG or TIFF format. File Naming lastname_firstname_01.jpg, lastname_firstname_02.jpg, and so on. Additional Information Artist statement and/or titles (if applicable). Artist bio, 100 words or less, written in the third person. Website URL.

Compress all material into a folder and send via email, Google Drive, or WeTransfer to [email protected] no later than 11:59pm on June 22. Incomplete submissions will not be considered.

Edited by past Papersafe contributor Paolo Morales, this issue is our largest yet at 150 pages. Paolo approached us a year ago with the idea of editing an issue around the idea of what intimacy looks like in photographs. It’s a simple idea, however, Paolo’s selection of photographs and photographers goes beyond the obvious, and examines the idea of intimacy in ways which we were not expecting. He has curated a body of photographs in this issue that allows us to view and understand intimacy on myriad levels from a range of perspectives: from Ka-Man Tse photographing the LGBTQ community in Hong Kong, to Hannah Price’s photographs of the men who catcalled her on the streets of Philadelphia, to Vivian Fu’s diaristic images of intimate moments with her partner.

From Paolo: 
One of the things that prompt me to take pictures is to understand what intimacy looks and feels like in photographs. The work in this issue doesn’t make me feel any closer to an answer, but an answer isn’t the point. These pictures made by friends, former teachers, and people whom I’ve never met but whose work I just admire, make me feel like the problems I grapple with as a photographer are not distinct or peculiar. In other words, looking at these pictures remind me of the joys of learning, discovery, and revelation in the act of seeing.

TODAY in New Haven @ YALE – Odds & Ends Art Book Fair

If you’re going to be attending this great little fair (not so little anymore!), keep and eye out for our latest issue. We won’t officially be there but our friends Annie Sollinger and Esther S White are generously giving us some of their table space – go say hi!

Empty Stretch has decided to come out of hiatus to announce a new grant aimed towards photographers and visual artists who have historically been overlooked, marginalized, and underrepresented in the artistic process – i.e. those individuals who do not identify as cisgender, white men. We feel strongly about this attempt to do our part to help bridge that gap, and hope to build this grant over the coming years. For this interpretation, we are looking for a black-and-white and primarily visual body of work, which the artist feels could work in a zine format. The recipient of the grant will work with us to make an edition of 100 zine of their work. Submissions will be open for the entire month of December, and it is free to enter. More information can be found below, as well as a link to the submission form.

Who can enter? This grant is open to all individuals who do not identify as cisgender white men.

What are you looking for? There is no theme for this grant, but the work should be in black-and-white and primarily visual based (including, but not limited to, photography, photographic collage, cameraless photography, etc.). Accompanying text and non-photographic work is allowed to be a part of the series, but the artist should consider if the work is right for the zine format.

What does the recipient win? The winner will work with us in the production of an artisanal zine. The final product will be between 20 – 40 pages, a saddle stitch zine in an edition of 100. The recipient will be given 15-percent of the production run, while the rest is distributed and sold through the Empty Stretch network to fund the production and overhead of future grants.

How do I enter? Find the submission form link below. Please include all required indicated fields on the form. Please submit a URL to where the proposed series or body of work can be viewed. We can not consider downloadable links; your images must be viewable online in some form or fashion. Private galleries are accepted as long as proper viewing instructions are included in the submission form “Additional Comments” section. Please also include a short personal bio, as well as an artist statement about the work.

Who will decide the recipient? At the moment, Empty Stretch’s founding members, Aaron Canipe, Jordan Swartz, and Nathaniel Grann, will decide the recipient of the grant. We hope that as the grant builds, we can begin to bring in industry professionals to assist with future judging.

When will the recipient be announced? We hope to complete the judging in early January 2017, with the winner announced in late January or early February. Depending on the production schedule, we hope to release the zine by mid-2017.

Do I retain copyright of my work? Yes. Empty Stretch claims no ownership over submitted and the recipient’s work. By submitting for the grant, Empty Stretch asks for the right to use submitted work in promotion related to the grant through our social media outlets and press related materials. All work used in that regard will be properly attributed to the artist.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Papersafe Issue #07: The Wild Created in collaboration with Nomadic Bookshelf

Papersafe is currently seeking submissions of film-based photographic work for its seventh issue.

The issue’s title, The Wild, shall serve as a prompt for submissions. We are most interested in broad visual interpretations of the word, idea, sense, or feeling, and have left this call purposely vague. For jumping off points, see:

For this collaborative issue, Nomadic Bookshelf has chosen five photographers whose work adheres to the above theme. From the submissions, we will then select photographs that compliment, contradict, or comment on the pre-selected works.

Papersafe #06: Ninety Seconds

Papersafe supplied four photographers with a unique, handbuilt Swordfish Camera and one month’s supply of Fujifilm FP100c peel-apart film. The idea was to provide each photographer (Jordanna Kalman, Josie Keefe, Molly Matalon, and Michael Christopher McCraw) with the means and material to continue on-going projects, experiment in the studio, or create entirely new work. The selected photographers all produced images that reveal the personal and investigative way they used the camera—looking through their work from this project is akin to briefly peering into their lives and glimpsing their creative process.
